2015 CR-V USB ports not charging

Getting very mixed information about a specific issue and hopefully can get a straight answer on this forum.

2015 model with dual USB ports. I have tried two Samsung smartphones, multiple cables and both ports. When the phone is plugged in, the charge light comes on and the phone display indicates it is charging. But it doesn't charge a bit. This behavior is across the board with phones, cables, ports. I can leave it on there for an hour without using it and it won't go up one percent.

Is this something I need to get fixed via the dealer? Or will I be told "Well, it's not really there to charge your phone. It's just for media connectivity."

Thanks much in advance,

Reviewing my 2015 CR-V Owners Manual in regards to the two (2) USB ports in the center console there is no mention that charging will occur while a device is connected.

Well, here is what I've found after a little bit of testing: My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S4. I have downloaded the Ampere app which reports on the amperage being received when charging.

When plugged into a number of Samsung chargers, the app reports the phone getting a 1200mA feed. When plugged into an external battery which I recently purchased, I also get a 1200mA feed. When plugged into an old Sanyo charger I have had for many years, I get a feed of 740mA. And using another old Motorola charger, I get 680mA. I would expect the old chargers to put out less as they were made prob 7-8 years ago and the phones I used then did not have the same battery demands (they weren't smartphones).

Plugging into the CR-V's ports, I get 460mA.

Ironically, this is the same mA that is shown as being drawn when not plugged into any charger, except that it is shown as a negative 460 (being a draw), and the colors on the app change to reflect the fact that the phone is drawing on the battery.

The ports DO indeed charge, and I am finding through limited testing that sometimes I get a VERY slow positive charge, and other times a get a drain as if it is not plugged in at all. Further, I am NOT using GPS or the screen at all during these times. The phone is sitting on the center console untouched.

And finally: If the ports are not intended for charging, then why do they charge at all? And why two USB ports if they are only used for connecting devices? Can you actually connect two different USB devices to the audio system at the same time and have them both be recognized by the system.

If anyone is willing to test their 2015 with the Ampere (or similar) app and let me know if they are getting the same results, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
NHAnimator

That makes sense... from a certain point of view. All USB ports (unless via an unpowered hub) are meant to supply 500mA at 5V, and battery chargers are meant to supply up to 1.5A at 5V. Of course it's extremely dumb of Honda to fail to make them proper charging ports, because now you're pretty much limited to a phone's battery life when using e.g. Sygic via MirrorLink, or just plugging in your phone while it's on a mount in order to have it glow all the time directing you around an unfamiliar area.

I put a 2.1A USB port in the 12V adapter myself.

I keep a SanDisk 32G flash drive in each of the two USB ports. They contain will tunes and work great. In regard to charging devices in these USB ports, I suppose some charge is better than none. It is a mystery why at least one wasn't designed to provide full charges.

In my old job we were warned for YEARS that the USB communication ports on our computers would not provide enough amperage to charge our phones. Seems as if this is the case with Honda's setup.

If you find that your phone battery is discharged and you need it for later, TURN IT OFF for a while while driving. It should take ~ 30 - 60 minutes to charge under those conditions.

Boo, I bought a new phone just to get Mirrorlink and Sygic running - from S4 to Note 4 - and noticing a battery drain when using Mirrorlink/Sygic.

Need to find someway to increase exiting 0.5A USB power or add a small powered hub using 12V & CRV USB port. Anyone find a tidy solution?

Anywho, going to try using one of these powered hubs with BC1.1 support:
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Adapter-Charging-Support-Motorola/dp/B005P2BY5I

USB 2.0 only supports up to 0.5A for charging unless a Battery Charging Specification (BC1.1+) is implemented. In short, data USB ports were not designed for charging and this BC spec is supposed to assist. Not surprised Honda didn't implement.

I'll have to use an inverter until I can create a DC-DC step down to power this little guy, but first I'll see if it works :p

I have the same issue. When I plug by Galaxy S5 into the USB port of my 2015 CRV, the phone pairs through bluetooth, but doesn't charge, even though the charging signal shows on the phone. Also, so far, I'm not a big fan of Mirrorlink, but I suspect that's an issue for a separate thread...

I thought it was so cool that this car had 2 usb ports in the console. Then I was sorely disappointed when I realized how useless they are. Yah they charge, but if you're actually using the phone for navigation or music or browsing, whatever, you're lucky to break even and not still be in a slow drain.

My old LG flip phone charges just fine... but it probably has a much lower drain than smartphones.
My complaint is that these ports, and the +12v power sockets all go OFF when the car is not running. I wouldn't even mind a slow charge if I could just leave the device plugged in in the parking lot while I am elsewhere. I'm glad there are (2) +12v, and (2) USB... way better than my last car.

FINALLY !!! i found people who understand whats the problem. I have iphone 6 and LG G2. I have a 2015 EX AWD. Both phones are used in auto brightness, wifi off, 4GLTE on, bluetooth on, pandora playing, Google maps or Waze running.

iPhone - Charges ultra-fast, And i mean Ultra Fast, even with everything above on, i can probably get a full charge in 1-2 hours. I purchased a Car charger from amazon (iXCC® Dual USB 4.8 Amp (24 Watt) SMART Universal High Capacity) , and it charges even faster...... fast enough to make me think its gonna burst in flames.

LG G2 - loses battery , doesnt charge, no matter where i plug it in. the only way to make it charge is to switch off everything and then charge. It will go up by 1-2 % in about 1 hour. I tried the usb port and Car charger port..... useless. I checked with ampere...... less current while charging than draining.... end result.. i lose battery......

any ideas ??? please help ? Is that a LG related problem or i just dont know how to shop for chargers ??

Here's one ...I have the Google pixel 2XL, and within the past 2 weeks, whenever I ha e .y phone charging in my 2015 CR-V, and connected via Bluetooth listening to music...my phone will just turn off. Doesn't happen when I'm at home charging it or charging my phone using a backup battery....just in my car

Finally this has been fixed in newer models. My 2019 will charge my Note 10+ while connected using Android Auto. I always hated how my 2014 Accord would only charge my iPhone. My Android phone would take days and that's only if I powered it off first.

I got my 2015 2 years ago and never had a problem until recently. The only thing that is new is Androids update to 10. Same charging cables, and my phone makes the charging noise intermittently (like when you if the charger into your phone) EVEN when my phone isn't connected to a charger. But learning that my cars USB ports etc aren't meant to charge a cell phone, is ridiculous.
