I believe that the Nexus 5 is compatible with slimport. Have you tried an adapter? This would allow you to plug the phone into the adapter then to the car. They even have ones that have a micro USB that can mirror while charging.
Yeah, I’ve considered that. I’m sure it would work given my experiment with the Chromecast. TBH, I thought that being able to take HDMI signal in gear would be the final hurdle and everything would be dandy after that. Having finally gotten it to work, here’s what I found.
1. A typical smartphone’s screen is better than the car’s screen. The car’s screen is actually of quite poor quality. The resolution and pixel density isn’t very high. Colors look very washed out. And even the size isn’t THAT much larger than a typical smartphone. I think it’s about 7” diagonal while my phone is about 5”. But when you’re looking at it from the driver seat, the difference is almost negligible. The smartphone display is unquestionably crisper and more legible.
2. The car can’t take any other audio input in HDMI mode. So you’re forced to play your music through your phone. That’s fine for most people since that’s probably what happens anyway. But you lose the ability the control your music without fiddling with the phone. Your steering wheel controls for rwd and fwd don’t work and there’s no more touchscreen controls.
3. Finally, the nail in the coffin: there’s no way to take or make phone calls using Bluetooth.
So I’m back to just mounting my phone and using Bluetooth.
