2016 CRV oil consumption

Just took our CRV to the dealership to have the trans fluid drained and filled (52000 miles) and they say I’m a quart low. I just changed the oil myself with genuine Honda filter, crush washer, and 0w20 oil (4.6 quarts including filter) in October so 2.5 months ago.

now, everything I’ve ever learned about cars says a motor should not burn oil like this at ~50k miles. I’ve read a few things online where Honda tries to claim 1 qt/1k miles is normal. I have an extended warranty (it’s a certified crv) so they recommended top off, oil consumption test driving 1k miles and then check again.

anybody know if this is Honda’s normal they will try to get away with or if it’s actually normal? There are no leaks and I would think that the minimal oil usage lining cylinder walls should notbe noticeable on the dipstick especially 2.5 months after change.

first, don't take their word for it. 2016 models weren't known for oil consumption. if you just got it back, check the fluid now. after 500 miles, check it again. after another 500 miles, check it. continue to do this and document it (a smart phone picture is a good tool for this as it time stamps all photos).

most dealerships i've taken my car too don't tell me it was low when getting an oil change. i do however always check it after they fill it. they lift the car, remove the bolt, and dump the oil in a pan with all the other used oil. then, fill it. i've really never seen nor been told my oil was low when i got an oil changed done at a dealership. and, i've had probably a hundred of them done over the years (i've owned a honda since 1988).

Good info so thank you. Just to clarify though, I do the oil changes myself and I did not have them change oil. While it was in for the trans fluid change they gave me a “complimentary multipoint inspection” and that’s how they determined it was low. I find it hard to believe in 2.5 months and 2k miles it burned a quart and that is considered “normal”

Just check the oil level periodically as noted above. You could 'top up' if actually needed, and then monitor occasionally.

Post back with the outcome.

Hi I am confused... you said trans fluid but you mention oil 0w20.....trans fluid is DW-1 oil engine 0w20 by the way never trust people at dealer... check it yourself (oil level) after they change it and just keep eye on this every 1000km if you suspect oil consumption....

My bad guys I need to clarify. I took it in for the trans fluid change and that’s when they gave me their “complimentary multipoint inspection” and told me my engine oil was low 1 qt after this inspection. So yes I took it in for trans fluid change but then discovered the car is burning engine oil. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Like has been posted in the prior posts, either monitor your oil consumption yourself or get a second opinion at a more honest shop. The said "complimentary multipoint inspections" are money makers for dealers and the service advisors and techs have incentives for making more money for the dealerships.

Also, if you change your own oil, you should do your own CVT Fluid changes as well. Actually, the CVT Fluid is easier to drain and fill than oil change.

A quart every 3k is deemed normal nowadays by most manufacturers but I think it’s a load of crap. Newer Honda 3.5 engines are known for burning oil, I had a 2001 Honda Odyssey with over 300k miles that never burned oil. My son is still driving it. I would keep an eye on it. They may have been trying to get you to use them for all your service so they said that to make you second guess your DIY skills.
The 3.5 and 3.7 had bad oil control rings, the patch was to replace the pistons and rings but that doesn’t fix the issue. It just gives them extra time for your warranty to expire. Honda quality is on the decline. I was pro Honda but not anymore. Everybody makes crappy cars now.. so sad

Dark Knight, you are entitled to your opinion as am I.
I don’t banter on forums with individuals so if that is your goal then you are barking up the wrong tree. If what I said didn’t appeal to you then apparently it wasn’t meant for you.

Ok, maybe saying “everybody makes crappy cars“ was a bit overzealous.
I’ve owned many cars over the years and all Honda/Acura as of late and the quality of the materials used by auto manufacturers and the skill of some of technicians that repair these vehicles at some dealerships has gone down dramatically, in my opinion, over the last few years.
i appreciate you calling me out on it and my apologies if you took exception to my statement. That was what I typed at the time, I’m not here to stir the pot, I’m here to gain and convey knowledge that I or others may not have.

Mine is fine... while high compression engines are harder on oil, you should be able to go awhile before you have to add oil. I've never had to add oil in the 2012 or 2016 from 3 to 7 months/4-5000 miles. They've always been within range. I'd check it yourself and see how it looks.

I just drove it the 1000 miles they recommended (800 of it was straight freeway on our drive from ATL to DAL) and it is reading normal. So either A.) they were just trying to scare me as mentioned above or B.) it takes more than 1000 miles but less than 3000 miles to burn a quart because it has not gone more than that since last oil change.

as for the other recommendations about changing my own CVT fluid, I’m not opposed to the idea but from my limited knowledge about it, you drain it and then fill back up until it pours out of a separate hole and that’s how you know it’s full. There is no dipstick to check though. And since these CVTs are trash and don’t last long anyway I don’t want to screw it up faster than it is going to wear out already.

Could it have been something as simple as the prior oil change was not filled up to the top dot, but only to the lower dot (e.g. to save oil cost for a small shop)? It'd look low being at the lower dot but could just have burned zero oil but only always been at the lower dot since the change.

No because I did the last oil change. I put exactly 4.6 qts in including the filter. So it being low can only mean burning it or leak and there are no leaks. I checked and Honda verifies, no leaks. So either the entire thing was made up by the Honda tech or it’s burning oil

Did you change oil brands at the most recent change?

Years ago we had a car that would use oil unless it was 'fed' the same brand of oil each time. Never found out why.


That was in the days of single-weight mineral oil and 6 month changes with summer and winter weights. I'm glad those days are over (and once-a-year coolant exchanges, too.). o_O
