Adjusting Parking Brake (and … Buying a Service Manual?)

Hi. Newbie here. (I WILL get into this forum more once I get used to the car. Honestly !!)
Firstly I'll update anyone who read my thread about an intermittent engine rattle: It wasn't, as first thought by the Honda garage, an Air Con Compressor bearing. They believe it's probably an alternator bearing but not in such bad shape as to do anything just yet and for them to be sure where the fault lies. I'll let it get a bit worse so that we can all be sure what it is.
Anyway, I'd like to have the parking brake adjusted as the lever comes right up and the brake has to be pulled up hard to hold the car on my drive. I'm guessing there's a hole in the rear drums to adjust a ratcheted wheel to push the brake linings out a bit. But I'm just guessing here. Am I right?
Also, while I'm on, can anyone recommend a Service Manual for my car? It's a Sept 2012 2.00 Auto EX and I might try a few repairs myself but would feel happier having a decent Manual. Any suggestions?
Thanks SAFC (John).

I've seen that, thanks. I was thinking this adjustment you've shown (done from inside the car) is for cable slackness rather than break pad adjustment. I've seen adjustment videos for other types of Honda where a notched adjuster is accessed through the "rotor" (brake drum). There's a rubber plug removed and a flat-bladed screwdriver can be used to prise the adjusting nut up or down. I'm just wondering if this can be done on CR Vs? Also, have you seen a decent service manual anywhere for a 2012 CR-V?
Many thanks.

When you apply the Parking Brake, I recall I had about half the Lever. is that what you are getting? Not to stop you while doing 50mph, does not use the ABS, or Master cylinder, it is a manual hand brake no pressure. you can really pull up on it about 3/4 lever and it will stop you. For me I do at times will use the hand brake/parkbrake to make sure its free, then be stuck. we all should do that for maintenance.

Like shown in that vid you have to find the adjuster to tighten the loose slack, a few turns should do,

I've found something that might answer my question … a video showing how the star nut can be adjusted through the drum and this will move the position of the brake pads. This video is for a 2013 CR V so should apply to mine.
I could still do with a Service Manual though. Any recommendations for a service manual appreciated. (Here in the UK, Haines manuals are popular but they don't seem to have one for any CR V from 2012 onwards).

While there IS a star wheel adjuster inside the center hub of the rear disc brake setup, the shoes should NOT suffer any significant wear unless someone drives with the parking brake on. We have adjusted our cable and brake shoes only ONCE (each) during our '06's 16-year, 190,000 mile ownership.

You DO have rear disc service brakes, not drums, right? (I ask because different markets got differing setups. EG '07 Fit/Jazz had rear drums in the USA but rear discs in other parts of the world)

Our method of adjustment for the star-wheel (which can be a $^*#@^^% to adjust through the plug ) is to remove the rotor, and adjust it so that it drags when the parking brake lever is raised two clicks, but free when fully released. It usually requires several tries, in my experience.

Thanks. I need to make sure I can change a wheel easily - should ever need to, so I'll park somewhere flat and see if I can tweak the adjuster at the same once once I have a rear wheel off.. Many thanks.

If you want to do it yourself, you can buy a one day factory service manual pass for $25 USD from Honda American Honda Motor Company, Inc. - Service Subscriptions

There are also OEM subscriptions from Alldata, but I don't think they have just one day passes.

I just have the service tech do it... only $45 USD.
