Another Oil Consumption Question - Extreme

Hello All. Our Son's 2012 CRV EX with 129000 had his oil changed just under 3 months ago at Pep Boys. Right after that time, he developed an issue with is exhaust where his car got louder and louder. We finally took it to a new mechanic we have been using to fix the exhaust issue. It was very loud to the point where you can smell fumes in the car. It ended up being rusted out flanges and it was almost like open pipes. Anyway, that is getting fixed. However, he also said when they checked the oil it appeared that no oil was show up on the dip stick. From October 9th 2024 till now my son likely only did 1000 miles since he just drives back and forth to school and one longer trip. Now we have had issues with Pep Boys lately and it is always possible they underfilled somehow. But based on what I have been reading oil consumption seems to be an issue with these cars but it seemed extreme in our case. The mechanic did indicate that there are no obvious leaks and my son told me the car does not smoke at all (Cat might be knocking that out). I have the following questions:

#1) Is it at all possible that the exhaust issue (which was more than just a leak) could have caused the oil consumption?
#2) I highly doubt the PCV valve was ever replaced and I brought that up to the mechanic and he indicated that the car did NOT throw any codes about issues with the PCV so he is thinking it might NOT be the PCV valve but he is going to replace it anyway. If there were issues with the PCV value (Stuck open or closed) generate a code?
#3) We did have the VTC actuator replaced a little over a year ago due to the cold start rattle. It seemed to fix the rattle but it happens very rarely now. But could the time chain be an issue causing the oil consumption issue?

I know cars with this high mileage is known to have issues with piston rings, etc but it seems extreme in this case. Our mechanics is rather concerned about. We will need to keep an eye on it now.

Much appreciate any thoughts on this .

Hi Dave.
#1 I doubt an exhaust leak had anything to do with the oil consumption. Surprising that a leak that bad didn't throw a P0420 (cat efficiency) code.
#2 A plugged PCV will not throw a code, but can cause other problems that could trigger one. As it prevents the crankcase pressure from venting, it can force oil mist past the piston rings.
#3 If the timing chain is a concern, have the mechanic check it for wear and cam alignment, it is a fairly quick/easy check, detailed in the Service Manual. Can't think how it would contribute to oil consumption.

There are many posts concerning the piston ring sealing problems that seem to start with the 2010 models, lots of different solutions for 'un-sticking' the rings.
Good luck with this.
Thanks very much for the constructive response. Much appreciated.

Always check your oil immediately after an oil change. Don’t trust anyone did anything right.
Thanks. I have been having issues with pep boys lately so we will be going elsewhere. We will be watching things with this car going forward. The car requiring 2+ quarts of oil after less than 1000 miles is a concern.

Much appreciated
