21 EXL Apple Car Play was working great, then suddenly stopped working....the button for it was "grayed out" on the display. After restarting phone and car, trying various cords, disconnecting and reconnecting my phone to Apple Car Play, Honda told me it was a phone problem and referred me to the phone store to "reinstall the Apple Car Play app" and fix it. (Chuck at Jeff Wyler Honda Florence KY is the rudest, most ignorant *** there is, but that's another story.)
Phone store advised there is no such app and problem is the computer in the car.
Marty at Jeff Wyler Honda Florence KY did a factory reset to get it going again. (See Marty if you are buying a car there)
Anyone else had this issue? How often does this happen? If reoccurring, what did you do to get it permanently resolved?

Carplay is not an app. It's an in-built feature of iOS.

I am having a similar problem. Car Play was working perfectly when I left the dealership. Now it won’t let me connect my iPhone 11. I have performed the factory reset, changed the USB cable, restarted my iPhone and I still get this message. Any ideas?

Hold the Volume button in for about 10 seconds, until you get a menu with "reboot" as an option. Select Reboot.
This worked for me, Honda dealership was going to charge me $175.00 diagnostic fee. Ridiculous!!
