Apple CarPlay issues & solutions

When it works Apple CarPlay is great. The phone and messages functions are easy to use and Siri is reliable. But there are a few issues or bugs that are not unique to Honda CRV 2017 - everyone is reporting these to Apple.

1) Random disconnects of the CarPlay system resulting in a "Device not found" or "Check USB...".

2) Pandora random playing and taking over.

3) Navigation sounds not lowering music when turning.

4) No instrument panel when using Apple Maps unlike Android Auto.

5) Slow response of the screen.

I talked to Apple and they said they aware of the issues and its not just Honda CR-V but it's across all car makers with CarPlay. Future updates promise to fix these. But they did provide me with some solutions.

1) Random disconnects

Probably the most frustrating problem. They are still trying to pinpoint it but it looks like the car and the phone have issue in handshaking and talking to each other and the iPhone completely resets the signal.

Their solution is to simply turn off disconnect and reconnect with the iPhone in the unlock mode. Restarting an iPhone also fixes it. But eventually the bug comes back.

The ultimate solution is delete the iPhone from Honda and repair it since it builds a new connection.

They also said Resetting the iPhones Network Services also works. These settings contain all your wifi passwords and sometimes (occasionally) they get corrupt. Especially if you have certificates on wifi or use Apple Watch or other wifi devices.

Fix
General - Reset - Reset Network Settings
(Note this erases your stored Wifi passwords)

What's is happening here is iPhone is always looking for best signals. Some wifi' or cell signals confuse the iPhone during driving. If you driving in rural you will find zero disconnects. That's the theory and they are working on a fix. It's good to do this anyway since it's a common bug in Apple iPhone world.

Some say change the lightning cable and use the original but this doesn't always work. I unplug and replug and that sometimes does the trick.

2) Pandora confusion.

This is happening to me as well. It seems the Honda CR-V can do Pandora via Bluetooth and via CarPlay. It seems to default randomly to Bluetooth once in a while. That's a Honda CR-V Bug. Will be exploring this one.

3) Navigation sounds too low.

This works in the 2016 Honda Civic and not on ours. Not sure. When you are using a CarPlay app like Music, NPR One or some others then it DOES turn the music down (at least it does on mine). When you are using other source of audio such as FM or SiriusXM - the music is loud. This is a Honda bug.

4) No instrument cluster maps like Android Auto.

Yes. Apple promised it when they unveiled iOS 10 but so far no cars have it, yet Android Auto has it. So this is Apple's fault. Maybe an update might fix this but probably needs a Honda update give permission to the instrument cluster.

5) Slow CarPlay touchscreen response.

Happens randomly. A quick reset of iPhone usually fixes this. It's probably a memory overload - like when you have too many open apps. Occurs more on iPhone 6 and below since they have less onboard ram (1 gig ram compared to 2). Advice is to restart iPhone weekly.

The next big update iOS 10.3 will introduce a revised new CarPlay screen with 3 recently used icons on the side. Actually 2 icons and the always visible map as seen in the photo.

iOS 11 will probably bring more CarPlay functionality including even better maps.

More map improvements are coming.

I imagine we will probably get a "junction" view or lane view and some collaboration features such as Waze. Currently Apple Maps gets its traffic from a combo of services including but in the future we might have a "report traffic" button. The current Maps has two displays - Overview and Detail map. These are not easy to locate so I'm sure Apple will put some icon to switch between both. Apple sources its maps from Tom Tom so a quick look at their standalone GPS and you can see what might be coming.

As for Waze.

It's not coming to Apple CarPlay unless Apple lets Google take over. Most likely Android Auto will use Waze over its current maps.

I also foresee some kind of Gas Fuel CarPlay app. HondaLink AHA used to have this but it never made it to our 2017 HondaLink version (which is really useless).

My CarPlay does NOT lower the music app volume and I can't hear the apple maps speak when music is playing at any volume over 10 or so. Volume guidance is at the max. iPhone 7 Plus running iOS 10.2.1

How is it that yours works with the Music App? What iPhone and iOS version do you have?

I used CarPlay for 2 days. That's how long it took for me to realize it's not ready.
I prefer Waze anyway. Luckily there is lots of room to the left of the screen for a sticky magnet mount for my phone for Waze use.

I have concluded that the disconnect on / off bug is in the Network settings. Somehow Apple iPhones network settings get corrupt and misbehave.

So if you are getting lots of disconnects using CarPlay and you are using a Apple lightning cable then Resetting the Network Services will cure it.

I am using the beta 3 of apple iOS 10.3 using an iPhone 6+. I am told it's coming out soon. Just remember if you reset then you need to find your wifi passwords. I have also noticed Safari is faster.

Also BMW is one of the few that have instrument cluster. I have yet to see it.

Apple CarPlay is "compatible for ultra-wide screens, therefore automakers such as BMW, Merecdes-Benz or Lexus that have a wide pop up in the dash can more easily implement CarPlay." Not sure if Honda CR-V in dash screen is considered "ultra-wide."

Now the next big bug is Pandora which continues to turn on & become default.

I have. My "Guidance Volume" is at its max of 11. So you mind testing Apple Maps with Apple's music app, Spotify, or something from within the iPhone besides just FM? In your pandora test, how loud was your pandora. If my Pandora is at around 10 I can hear apple maps fine, but if pandora is at 15 I can hardly hear it Maps. What month was your car built? If things seem to work fine, do you mind sharing your Infotainment system version? Thanks.

I will update the thread about my carplay switching from Apple Music to Pandora on its own, but I wanted to mention it here as well.

I ended up rebooting the head unit of the CR-V and I deleted the Pandora app on my iPhone.

Those two things (definitely deleting the app on my phone) did the trick.

I think this issue is more Apple's fault than the CR-V. Perhaps when plugging in the phone, iOS thinks it must try to play Pandora by default instead of what was last played in the CR-V (which is Apple Music for me).

I've never had the pandora opening on its own issue. Are your cars running a different version of the infotainment system? Can you confirm if you can hear the Babi while music is playing and report your iPhone model and iOS versions? Maybe even the infotainment version and also your car model. I suspect the pandora issue is specific to non navi models.

I don't use Pandora, but it would be interesting to test it while it runs in the background vs. not. In other words, if you've had the Pandora app running and then gone on to do other things, the app itself stays open in the background and may easily get triggered if there is an audio request to the iPhone. To test this out, you would need to kill the Pandora app after you've finished with it by double-clicking the Home button to bring up the task switcher, selecting the Pandora app, and then swiping up to close it. It might be worth a shot to see if that makes any difference or not.

I can confirm that Navigation audio IS LOWERED when using CarPlay Apple Maps and listening to FM radio.

It's definitely noticeable. I haven't tried when using Pandora nor SiriusXM.

I am using iPhone 6+ and 10.3 (Beta version 14E529d) on a 2017 Honda CR-V Ex-L (Canadian made).

So there is hope this bug might be fixed in future Apple updates.

---- Pandora bug still there even when I force quit Pandora. My theory is Honda is defaulting to Bluetooth Pandora. I have some settings to play with. Keep you all posted.

I think it's possible that the EX-L units don't have the bug that our units have. Because you don't have a navigation the audio management is programmed differently.

Do you even have a "Guidance Volume" setting? The issue with then navi units arises from the "Guidance Volume" which isn't doing it's job properly.

I can confirm that my Touring has no Pandora auto-opening issues of any kind.

I'm running IOS 10.3 beta. I did the CarPlay pandora Apple maps test.
Apparently I wasn't using my radio loud during my initial tests. I ran it during my commute today with pandora above 18 volume and even with adjusting the Apple maps navigation sound to the highest of 11, the navigation was not able to be heard. I'm not sure if the problem is CarPlay or the radio, but regardless it's annoying.
I will be sticking with Waze for now.

This is 100% Honda's issue. Apple CarPlay relays ALL volume control to the car. The iPhone has no job in messing with volumes once it relays that data to the car. The car then is reponsible for identifying Guidance Audio (which it does) and Music audio (which it does). The car is also responsible for lowering that music audio (which it doesn't). You THINK it lowers it, but it doesn't. What you are hearing is an attenuation. The lowering is NOT proportional to the volume of the guidance.

The maximum "Guidance Volume" allowed in the car is 11. If your music is at 10, the car attenuates it and lowers it to about 7, which really isn't enough. If your music is at volume 29, it attenuates and lowers it to about 26 or so, that's hardly lowering. In no planet will a Volume of 11 (guidance's max) overpower the attenuated-music of 26. Honda needs to update their infotainment system to adequately attenuate music while the navi is speaking, it needs to bring it down to at around the volume level of 5 regardless of how loud your music is, so that it is always well enough the Guidance Volume max of 11 - that's the only way for it to be heard.

This is the car's reponsibility because it needs to do this independent of the audio source - whether is apple music, FM, XM - it shouldn't care. All the car needs to care about is that it is lowering the music volume from 40 to 5, or 20 to 5, or whatever to 5, so that it is always below the guidance volume max of 11. If you have your guidance volume set to 6, then the car should know to ALWAYS lower the music volume, regardless of the source, to 3 or 2 so that your guidance volume is heard.

Having alow guidance volume isn't an excuse for the music to overpower the guidance volume - their algorithm needs to adequately control the volume levels, and it is clear that Honda didn't bother to take a pre-production car out for a drive and test their very important infotainment system. You know why they didn't do that? Because they don't care, they prefer to brush it under the rug, just like they did Takata in the 2000s.

If they didn't care about Takata, why would they care about CarPlay?

I have the EXL and iPhone 5S.

My Bluetooth defaults to Pandora even if iTunes was last played. Pandora will even cut off the iTunes music that began playing up to 10 second later when I first start the CRV and switch to Pandora. This is highly undesirable.

Pandora Fix:

Unfortunately the only fix I have found is to Delete the App, start the car. The system will stop looking for Pandora.
Later reinstall the Pandora app.

Disconnecting or Random Crashes Fix

1) Reboot the receiver -- press on/off button for 6 secs. It clears the memory.
-- if problem continues
2) Reset Network Settings then RESTART the iPhone.

This is an infotainment bug. It 'could' be the system's memory needs to be cleaned.

On my last Pioneer AppRadio, when I had issues like this, I just remember to tune it to AM/FM or Sirius XM just before I turned off the ignition to prevent "Bluetooth" radio confusion.

I've noticed the last few days that when plugging in my iPhone, it starts playing some random Jazz even if I was listening to something else on Spotify or the Podcast app. Deleting Pandora now and will report back. I have a touring since release and have not had an issue until very recently.

Some more CarPlay updates.

Not sure if this was in earlier versions of iOS 10.2 but in the upcoming 10.3 (should be out any day now) there is a section to control your Navigation voice output. You can set it to louder. So maybe this solves the issue with CarPlay Navi voice not being loud over music.

10.3 also adds 2 recently used apps plus always on maps on the left side for faster switching and a music Next button.

Finally Pandora bug seems to be widespread and not just affecting Honda infotainment systems. Pandora automatically plays with many Bluetooth car apps. Fix is in the works but it comes from Pandora.

I've just recently figured out how to use the Carplay so I've been reading this thread with interest. I don't seem to be having any of the issues spoken of here, but I haven't used my nav and Carplay at same time yet. When talking about the guidance volume are you using the nav on your phone or the built in Honda nav system? I have only used my built in nav and not since using carplay. I usually listen to my music at around 20 vol level and the nav has lowered the vol when listening to XM or USB stick. Not sure I'm understanding you guys correctly.
