CARFAX doesn't report all my oil changes

I went to Jiffy Lube for my first several car changes which weren't report to CARFAX.

Is it worth my time to update this record?

Is there $ involved to do this?

Thanks

As others have noted, this is hit or miss, depending on who changes the oil, or performs other services. Dealerships and some other service providers do in fact participate in this program with CARFAX, some do not. The program is automated, requiring a service provider give CARFAX access to their service databases, and the owners email address. I'm sure somewhere on the service paperwork terms and conditions, there is a line that stipulates an owner agrees to this as part of a service visit.

What is really taking place here is clever push marketing. CARFAX in the guise of offering owners, and later buyers, easier visibility of vehicle service records is doing co-marketing. CARFAX needs a reason to periodically ping vehicle owners of their presence and value, AND service providers like the fact that CARFAX encourages routine and normally required service to vehicles. Owners of vehicles do not really gain anything from this in my view, but it also does no harm either.

I use the "carfax car care" app for android. It pulls any service records over from shops who participate to your phone or other smart device. It allows you to log in DYI jobs as well as shops that don't participate. Just put your VIN in for each car, easy maintenance record keeping. It also notifies you when a service is due or registration is about to expire.

It doesn't anything other than time to post records to Carfax. Jiffy Lube (and likely hundreds more places like it) figure it's not worth theirs to upload the record. My Honda dealer certainly didn't figure it was worth the time either for the 2017 CRV I had serviced there. The only record I saw from Jiffy Lube was the annual required inspections for my State, which I assume since they had to upload it there they can also send it to CarFax.
One major omission I can attest to for my 2017 CRV was that a deer hit me less than a month after I bought the car new, causing over $8000 in damage. Never showed up on CarFax. Which is great for me the owner - for the buyer depending on accuracy - not so much.

Carfax is not the gospel. It’s just another tool in determining the condition and value of a car or truck. If you trade your vehicle the dealer could not care less about oil changes! If you sell it to someone yourself they would be more inclined to want the maintenance logs.

When you submit it it is just for your records. Doesn’t cut ally go on the carfax. Only carfax participants go on the report. I been using the app for a few years now. If you search a participant that is a gold member you can get a lifetime carfax report. They most likely will email you and add it to your app. Nothing is for free right. the dealer might reach out and say it’s time for a n oil change since they know your mileage from the app. They could also send you an offer for your vehicle.

Jiffy lube got a bad rapport with a lot of people, but some Honda dealers do too. Honda dealer looks better on a maintenance log for sure. Just google Jiffy lube scam.

I bought our CRV with 9k miles, look who did the 1st oil change... :ROFLMAO: Car is just fine, all covers intact...well, I hope they did! (From Carfax site)

Keep an eye on your Carfax. They had my mileage listed at over 123,000 instead of the actual 28,000. And the error was theirs; records on the Honda site were correct. Fortunately they fixed it in a couple days after I emailed them my last oil change paperwork showing 23,000.

Simple way to keep from getting sold unnecessary services is to write the date & mileage on your filters each time you replace them. Use a Sharpie or some other type of permanent marker to do so. Except for early generations of the CRV & other Honda models [in the Accord you had to remove a screw from a frame crossmember to access the cabin filter] changing the cabin & engine air filters is not that difficult to do in your own driveway.

Very easy to do if you buy the filters yourself. Write on that info the morning of your oil change.

Can also do this on your oil filter, but might have to buy a silver-colored marker.

As long as we're talking Carfax I'll share a Craigslist scam I encountered selling a car a couple years ago. Caller insisted he wanted "the report".... Huh? Told him it was up to him if he wanted the carfax, the vin was there in the pics. Back and forth, he wanted a specific report from some registry I'd never heard of (there's hundreds) and "since I'm offering to pay your asking price it's not too much to ask for this report". Comically fishy (pun intended). Looked it up as a scam and yes, you go to the suggested website, only $15 for the report, cheaper than carfax but you just gave them YOUR CREDIT CARD!!!! Complete scam.

Only time I let the honda dealer touch my car is for warranty work or recall. I normally do all the PM work myself, but a cheap Honda coupon lured me in for an oil change. Next oil change I did myself and found the dust cover plate missing. This plate has several threaded screws in addition to the twist lock plastic fasteners, so I know it didn't just fall off on its own. Complained and they gave me a beat up cover plate that had obvious marks of being hammered back into shape. If I ever need warranty work, I'll be looking closely next time before I leave the lot.

I personally think CARFAX doesn’t matter. I maintained my 2013 from time of purchase (new) until I traded it Sep 22 with 121k miles and never reported anything to CARFAX. I kept all my records and offered them at the time of trade but salesman didn’t want them. I still got $10k for the car.
