Like the thread posted by JB if you discuss illegal modifications to a safety feature in this forum the thread will be locked. I would just relax and get used to the sound. I personally think its funny and everyone who has heard it thinks it's pretty funny too and is a neat talking point about the car. I don't mind it one bit. Just know:
1. If you ever hit anyone and it is discovered you disconnected this system then you will be sued for all the money you have got.
2. There is a possibility that they will check this during annual vehicle inspections, in which case you might not pass and they will force you to reconnect the system anyway. Being a safety system they might be looking at this.

Why do you consider this an “illegal” modification?

Nope, no button here, as we have a federal mandate to have the system active.
Annoying, because the law doesn't apply except on public roads.
I'd like to have a selection of sounds available, ranging from the "Heavenly Choir" to the "Battle of the Bulge".
Would you happen to have a link to the Federal Mandate you make reference to. To my knowledge Teslas don’t have this.

I'd rather reprogram the synthesizer to sound like a Chevy LS3. :p

Has anyone actually confirmed the existence of Active Sound Control in the 2020 CR-V Hybrid? The only official reference I can find about ASC is an update from Honda stating that it is being added to the 2020 Civic Type R (rather different target customer base):

I have yet to run across any reference of ASC being added to any of the CR-V trims. Honda simply states that they are adding Active Noise Cancellation:

I suppose that one could argue that artificial engine noise is being introduced with ANC, but it is an out-of-phase signal intended to reduce the overall engine noise (not enhance it). I seem to remember finding a reference stating that ANC was disabled in Sport Mode, but I am unable to find it again or confirm that behavior.

Hi all,
Former 2012 CRV EX owner. We bought that one new and put 121,000 trouble free miles on it. Although it probably had a lot of life left, wife wanted something newer. Happy wife, happy life.

Bought a new 2020 CRV EX Hybrid in Sonic Gray Pearl yesterday at Phil Long Honda in Glenwood Springs, CO. (Ethan is great by the way if you ever go there)

I took it easy and putzed around for the first 100 miles or so even though I've heard that engine break-in isn't a thing like it used to be. I guess now hard acceleration and hard braking are the no-nos at first which I don't do anyway. (I'm old fashioned)

But then we headed for home in South Dakota. Going up the rocky mountains at 50-65 mph the engine REALLY REVS. Like I felt like it was going to blow up. I'm guessing it's normal and the smaller gas engine needs to do that to make it up extreme hills, but just wanted to verify that others have experienced this? The rest of the trip that wasn't huge uphills was very pleasant with little to no engine noise. Any personal experiences would be great to hear. Thanks much

Casey in SD

P.S. We hit a blizzard for the last 200 miles and many vehicles in the ditch, but the CRV trudged right on. Much like my 2012. Very capable vehicles in poor weather.

It's normal. The gas engine isn't connected to the wheels in that situation. It is driving a generator, which powers the electric motor. So the revs of the engine are completely unrelated to the revs of the wheels.

It has to really rev up to generate enough electrical horsepower to climb that mountain.

+++++

BTW, coming down the mountain your battery will probably charge to 100% from regenerative braking. If you use the paddles, it will then simulate downshifting by sending the electricity to the generator and spinning the ICE. It will make a similar sound.

Indeed, Sport modus is 'better for your ears', so to speak. We don't have a lot of hills here in The Netherlands (as flat as Florida) but I use the car for towing a boat trailer. Same effect as going uphill when accelerating with a boat hitched to the car.

In the EU version the car by standard comes with active noise cancelling system acc. to spec perhaps this would not work well, when the I-VTEC hits 7000 RPM's :) But I never considered the engine sound is fake ... it actually sounds quite cool, giving impressions is bigger, more deep sound, than just a 2.0 ltr ..

Not sure why the Hybrid needs ANC as the Honda blurb talks about VCM cylinder deactivation and exhaust noise. Surely we aren’t talking about the Hybrid here.

Can anyone explain how the speakers cope with audio from the infotainment, ANC and Sat Nav instructions at the same time. I’m sure there’s a simple explanation as to how three systems work in parallel so I’d appreciate it if someone can enlighten me.

I also have a suspicion that the ANC is impairing sound from the audio system and I can’t find the unit in the RHD Hybrid to unplug it. Anyone know where it is.

I would be assuming the way it works alike for instance in the headphones, the difference here is I cannot find a button to adjust the level of noise cancelling ...

Anyways, I realized just now ... the sound system although I did not get any upgrade to it, not even sure if that's an available option, works very well ... surprisingly well ... Anyone has an experience to compare how was it with previous generations?

Hi everyone, yesterday I joined the club with my purchase of a 2021 CR-V Hybrid EX-L AWD in Obsidian Blue Pearl.

I have been sitting in it and setting everything up for almost two days now and I love it.

Today however I put the car in Neutral and I started hearing a sound from under the car like a church choir chanting and angling "ahhhhhhhhh" sound.

I put the car in reverse and the sound stayed, put the car in drive and it went away a few seconds later. When I come up to alight and hit my break the angles singing come back but not as loud as before.

I thought. maybe it had something to do with the regenerative breaking system, but its doing it when I am not hitting the breaks. Nor am I using the paddles behind the steering wheel at the time.

Is this noise normal? Or is there something wrong with my new car?

Thanks!

This is the acoustic vehicle alerting system (AVAS) to alert pedestrians that a vehicle is approaching. It’s required in some countries, including the US.
You’ll only hear it when you’re driving in electric mode.

Metcafjohn is correct. EV can be very quiet. Apparently there is concern of visually impaired stepping off the curb, as they cannot hear the vehicle approaching. Choir of Angles is an interesting way of putting it as its supposed to prevent sending pedestrians to meet Angels. Theoretically it may also work to alert teens on cell phones...

"UFO Landing" and "a Chorus of Robots" have also been used to describe the sound.
The sound stops once you hit 20 MPH.
I don't think the hybrid (or the 1.5T) have enough power to stir a teenager from a phone-induced coma.
