Hi everyone, yesterday I joined the club with my purchase of a 2021 CR-V Hybrid EX-L AWD in Obsidian Blue Pearl.

I have been sitting in it and setting everything up for almost two days now and I love it.

Today however I put the car in Neutral and I started hearing a sound from under the car like a church choir chanting and angling "ahhhhhhhhh" sound.

I put the car in reverse and the sound stayed, put the car in drive and it went away a few seconds later. When I come up to alight and hit my break the angles singing come back but not as loud as before.

I thought. maybe it had something to do with the regenerative breaking system, but its doing it when I am not hitting the breaks. Nor am I using the paddles behind the steering wheel at the time.

Is this noise normal? Or is there something wrong with my new car?

Thanks!
That's a normal sound for a hybrid. Just appreciate your choral accompaniment.

I bought 2020 CRV-Hybrid EXL in USA. It does make sound and annoying. Is there a way to turn it off?
The USA made-models have no switch, apparently other variants do.
I can think of several ways to disable it, ranging from brute force to software hacks. I wouldn't expect a dealer or even an indy shop to do it though.
But I wonder if states that inspect vehicles check this. If you live in such a state I'd be careful.
It's probably technically illegal to disable it, but so are a lot of things.

I can hear it. It's faint but it's there. Is your window down?
I’ve found the easiest way to hear it is to put it in reverse as it comes right on.

I just never realized that this was an artificial noise. I aways thought it was just the gears spinning or something.

I don’t think My 2017 Honda accord hybrid made this noise.

I believe this is a new legal requirement.

United States[edit]
The Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2010 was approved by the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent on December 9, 2010 and passed by the House of Representatives by 379 to 30 on December 16, 2010.[2][29][30] The act does not stipulate a specific speed for the simulated noise but requires the U.S. Department of Transportation to study and establish a motor vehicle safety standard that would set requirements for an alert sound that allows blind and other pedestrians to reasonably detect a nearby electric or hybrid vehicle, and the ruling must be finalised within eighteen months.[2][5] The bill was signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 4, 2011.[31]

A proposed rule was published for comment by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in January, 2013. It would require hybrids and electric vehicles travelling at less than 18.6 mph (30 km/h) to emit warning sounds that pedestrians must be able to hear over background noises. The agency selected 30 km/h as the limit because according to NHTSA measurements, this is the speed at which the sound levels of the hybrid and electric vehicles approximated the sound levels produced by similar internal combustion vehicles.[32][33] According to the NHTSA proposal, car manufacturers would be able to pick the sounds the vehicles make from a range of choices, and similar vehicles would have to make the same sounds. The rules were scheduled to go into effect in September 2014. The NHTSA estimates that the new warning noises would prevent 2,800 pedestrian and cyclist injuries during the life of each model year electric and hybrid vehicle.[33][34]

In February 2013, the Association of Global Automakers and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which submitted a joint comment to the NHTSA, announced their support to the rule, but asked the NHTSA to find a noise level that effectively alerts pedestrians without being excessively loud to others inside and outside of the vehicle. They also commented that the rule is too complicated, unnecessarily prescriptive, and it will cost more than necessary. Some automakers also said there is no need for electric-drive vehicles to play sounds while not in motion, "since it is not clear that it helps pedestrians to hear cars that are stopped in traffic or parked." In addition, the vehicle manufacturers requested the NHTSA to make the new sound system required by 2018 instead of 2014.[33][35][36]

In January 2015, the NHTSA rescheduled the date for a final ruling to the end of 2015. Since the regulation comes into force three years after being rendered as a final rule, compliance was delayed to 2018.[37] In November 2015, the NHTSA rescheduled one more time because additional coordination was necessary. A final ruling was delayed at least until mid-March 2016.[38] After several additional delays, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued its final ruling in February 2018. It requires hybrids and electric vehicles travelling at less than 18.6 mph (30 km/h) to emit warning sounds that pedestrians must be able to hear over background noises.
The regulation requires full compliance in September 2020, but 50% of "quiet" vehicles must have the warning sounds by September 2019.[3]

I just purchased a 2021 Hybrid CR-V touring and when I put it in reverse I heard the weirdest sound just as you describe, it gave me the creeps and I thought something was wrong . I called the salesman at my dealership and he explained that sound it's there to let you know you are in reverse, I believe it also happens if left in neutral for a while. So YES, it is a normal function. You can go into your setup screen, select vehicle options and somewhere in the menu you are given a choice to turn that OFF..I have gotten to like it even thought it is a weird and strange sound but it makes a good conversation theme with your passengers.

It comes on regardless of direction of travel and you cannot turn it off in American CRVs.

I just went through every setting out of curiosity and did not find any way to turn it off. I didn’t wanna turn off anyway because anything that helps prevent me from hitting a pedestrian I’m good with.

Guess you could stuff a sock in the speaker. Or if you are handy there is just a few pop fasteners holding it in so you could probably just unplug it.

According to a previous thread, unplugging it will throw an error code and turn on a dash warning. I'm sure an 8 ohm resistor would work.

Am I the only one that doesn't mind this noise?
I don't mind it in the grocery store parking lot.
I mind it like heck if I'm trying to sneak up on an antelope.
Not everyone operates on public roads all the time.
