Today I spent a good 5 hours making a bike rack for my CR-v. it was a long and grueling day but it was worth it. This bike rack was made from cut and welded steel: 1.25x1/8 sq tube, sheet steel at LEAST 3/16 in diameter, and square tube which fits inside the larger tube. tap kits and bolts are also nice so you can remove the prongs that hold the bicycles.

instead of providing exact instructions i'm leaving you with my pictures. this makes your situation much more adaptable since you can use whatever you want. Hopefully this can give you an idea of how strong your bike rack ideally should be. try not to use significantly thinner steel if your conditions are such, spend 5 hours making something that lasts! :)

DIMENSIONS
When you are creating the dimensions, make sure your bicycle handlebars are straight. position the height of the holders so your handlebars clear the passenger edge of the window hatch. if you keep the height of the prongs the same, the window should open (even if you have a high mountain bike seat like me)

Here is the finished product! it's a small bike rack that holds a lot of weight, clears the window and opens with the bicycle on it, and opens sideways completely! for the metal prongs that hold the bicycles I used old bike tubes held on with zip ties. this also doubles as a rust preventative for the metal underneath! cut tennis balls or racquetballs can be used for the ends of the pipe (I didn't put any on)
