So recently my inside door handle on the driver's side stopped working. The outside works just fine so if I want to get out I usually need to roll my window down to open it from the outside. I pulled my door panel off to see if the handle itself is broken and all seemed to be well. The issue it seems, is that the piece of metal the handle attaches to in order to open the door doesn't have enough room to travel in order to actually open. What would I have to replace in order to fix this?

I’ve been through this too. Can’t quite remember what my solution was. If the little screw that holds the handle in the door comes loose then the handle assembly moves and doesn’t have enough travel to open the door so that’s one possible problem.

I think what I did was bend the rod in a couple of places that the handle actuates to tighten it up a bit.

My only guess would be that the mechanism the rod is moving has just gained a lot of slop from age, I did bend the rod a little bit and after reconnecting it to the handle it seems to work again. Maybe getting a new latch would fix the extra travel the mechanism gained over time but I'm not sure.

A couple of issues can cause this.
First the metal rod that connects the door latch to the interior door release can bend over time, I have put an extra bend in mine to make the travel shorter.
Second the door release handle can crack so that it no longer moves the release rod, it acts normal, but the rod with the spring can crack meaning the handle will feel correct, but does not move the rod, in which case you can super glue it back together, to work while the part is on order.
