My 2015 CRV typically will show a fuel range of about 410 miles after fill up. A few weeks ago I started my car and the information screen was blank. I scrolled through the available screens to display the screen I wanted without any problems. I assumed that I had accidently hit the scroll button the day before. One change from the norm was the fuel range indication. It was way off and continued to change erratically through that tank of gas. When I refueled the indicator was about 100 miles less than the expected amount and changed up and down as if it was seeking a logical value. It did eventually settle down and at the next fill up it was within the expected norm.

I guess my question is: Is this something that is common among the 2015 CRV models or am I about to experience a failure?

Also, how does the fuel range calculated, or what inputs to the computer are used to make this estimate?

It's not accurate at all. The range is based on your recent fuel mileage and it changes as your fuel mileage changes. You can fill up after you have been doing local running and get an indicated range. You can then get on the open highway for a while and the range will increase as your fuel level goes down because it recalculates based on your fuel mileage on the highway.
