Stopped in at the dealer today with the same problem we all have here. The service attendant said when he saw the part in my hand, "We get a lot of these and have lots in the parts dept." So they know and we will see tomorrow when they fix it!

I just pulled into the garage and placed in park and heard something klunk on my console and realized my shift release knob was missing (darkened interior). When I found the knob, I noticed it was broke!!
I bought my 2017 touring used 4 months ago w/ 6000miles. I can't believe it snapped off but it should be covered by my warranty.

I also have a 2017 CRV Touring and I just had the same problem about an hour ago while doing a 3 point turn. Had a hard time pushing the button to shift to Reverse and noticed it was very loose. I pulled it while wiggling it and came out in two pieces. I called the dealer and I'm taking it in tomorrow so they can see it. I hope the warranty covers it too.

In another thread it is reported that Honda has recognized the problem and that buttons are going to be replaced proactively when cars come in for service.
Be great if those of you having buttons replaced ask your dealer to confirm this program.

Just to clarify they will be replaced with the same design button for now but in early 2019 they will start replacing all 17 and 18 CRV's with a newly designed button that will not break.

Funny, this just happened to me........ Went to move the car in the driveway and the button broke........ Ugh! Reached in with my finger and was able to depress the rod enough to get it out of park and shift it into drive. Normally I would be annoyed by something like this, but since it happened to my 2005 Honda Accord that has 250,000 miles on it and not my 2017 CR-V, I was OK with it. $6 part ordered with free shipping and all should be right in my Honda household in several days ;)

Warranty item for reimbursement. But in the big scheme of things, cheap enough!

My 2017 EX-L just had this problem yesterday. Has anyone attempted the repair themselves? How do you remove the piece of the button assembly that's still (broken-off) inside the shift lever, and how do you install the replacement part?

Hey y’all. It’s 7/29/18 and this just happened to me. I found this forum in search for help. I have a 2017 CRV and I was putting my car into drive, when I heard something fall. I thought something may had fell over in the cup holder or something. I got home to realize my shifter button wasn’t there! I can put it back in and use it but it still pops back out. ?

I wish it was still under warranty Rocky, but simple enough fix on my 2005 Accord :) I would not be happy if it happened on my 2017 CR-V.........

Just curious, why would you want to if it's under warranty?

Happened to me, too

A week ago my shifter button fell off. I've since put it back and have wrapped it in duct tape, till I get it fixed. Clearly a design and/or manufacturing defect, because I've certainly done nothing stressful to the part.

Melted cheap gear shift button

Yes! I had that same issue. I was at a parking lot and i had to keep my foot on the break because I was stuck in reverse! This is the second issue I've had with my cry and its been less than a year! I also issues with my battery. The day after I had my car wouldn't start and I had to get it jumped on the highway! Two malfunctions in less than a year! Two roadside assistances! THIS IS UNHEARD OF..but the dealers don't care at all! This is going to be a recall.

haven't had this issue but i definitely put my finger on that little plastic cut on the other side of it.
I have to mentally stop myself from flicking it so i dont rip the thing off

2017 CRV
I was driving when I felt something hit my leg. Turns out it was the button from the gear shift knob which which when depressed let’s you move the gear shift. I can’t move the shifter to anything but drive or neutral. Luckily I’m a few miles from Honda dealer and I’m having it repaired right now. But the surprising thing is the tech tells me THIS HAPPENS ALOT!! And it’s routinely a problem with the CRV models.

I’m a year into this vehicle, and I’m more disappointed with each passing day. I have a noisy brake pedal, a radio that works sometimes, and now a combustible gear shift knob. I bought HONDA because I’ve had two prior to this one and didn’t have any problems. This one will be my last one.

Gear Shift Button

Here’s a picture of the gear shifter - oh, this vehicle is 2017 with 6,000 miles.
"My gear shift button on my 2017 CRV with 5500 miles went flying after breaking off also. My key is also stuck in the ignition. Really disappointed especially seeing that others have had the problem, as well as, the dealer knowing also."

See the sticky thread on known problems.
Honda is aware of the issue and has created a new button. Details are in the post.
