Gen 3 vs Gen 4 2.2 diesel

I am thinking of buying cr-v 2.2 diesel. I used to own gen 3 2.0 petrol but since it is sold i was thinking maybe getting the gen 4. I have some informations that the same 2.2 diesel engine is more economical on the gen4. Is this true? How can this be?
I am looking at the gen 3 from 2012 and gen 4 from 2013. I was happy with the gen 3 but i guess the 4 it will be even better?
I am looking for a diesel because my commute to work is 60km per day mostly highway i guess this is ok for the dpf.
Also i am maybe considering 1.6 diesel just because of fuel economy. What is the experience with this engine? Will it last as a 2.2?

Hi and welcome.

Both 1.6 (160bhp) and 2.2 i-DTEC engines are superb - as long as you are doing regular long runs to ensure the DPF doesnt get clogged.

If you are intent on going diesel, go for an auto. You will lose a few MPG's, but you wont have a clutch or DMF to worry about either in the longer term.

All of this, however, depends on your budget 👍

I have the gen 4, 2.2 diesel, getting around 42 to the gallon excellent car, i think Honda must have tweaked the engine to achieve bettter mpg than the gen 3 and it does have better mpg as far as i know, the gen 4 is a nicer looking motor having the facelift, great engine, very reliable so far for me, economical to and plenty of power, i don't no much about the 1.6 diesel except to say it is much easier again on diesel well into the 50's miles to the gallon, though i spoke to a friend who owns a 1.6 diesel a few years now and in his words all he ever did to his was to service it and put tyres on it, so prob pretty reliable to. and very economical, simply a great car in my opinion reliable good looking and i love it.

I wasn't fun of any turbo period. Now I got the 160 bhp CRV and the 120bhp civic 1.6 idtec (turbo).
If they are properly serviced no issues at all. Both and all modern diesels need long journeys once every month at least for those dpf and catalysts... Also to pove their value and good mpg...

There is no CVT in the 1.6 diesels.

DMF's will always be an issue for manuals - and obviously you'll be getting a used machine - you have no way of knowing how its been driven/maintained. Also, there are no major known flaws with the i-DTEC turbo's, of any model (unless badly maintained...).

DMF/clutch changes cost circa £1000+.

So not cheap by any means and eventually, DMFs and clutches WILL need replacing. The Auto would be a better option, regardless of 1.6 or 2.2 model - far more robust and less prone to failure.

OF course they need replacing!! They tend to wear out! 😁

Tbh modern Auto gearbox is so convenient nowadays, shifting is smooth, no need to worry which gear is on.. but most important aspect here is the fact that it has been maintained. And for me gearbox maintenance (manual or auto) means using Honda garage for Honda cars.

Still (sorry friends) I prefer manual. Not sure why, maybe I feel like I have better control over the car while using manual or something else? Dunno, still happy with the manual!
At the moment my V has approx 310k km and still runs ok. Probably before I reach 350k I'll need new DMF and clutch for sometimes car shakes little bit in reverse or in 1st gear (mostly overnight parking and misty morning) before the clutch pedal is fully released.

Oh, regarding the oil change: if i recall it correctly: the oil and filter is supposed to be done every 20k based on the manual for 2.2 i-DTEC. I have kept changing the oil+filter every 10-12k to ensure the oil does not come too dirty. I recommend doing this, but other opinions might also exist :)

but still wanted to point out that auto gearboxes are not completely problem free (well what would be..).
Still I get chills when someone claims gearbox to be lifetime sealed...
