Yeah.. the Hyundai is definitely totaled as I can see the airbags deployed.. and that almost always means a vehicle gets totaled... becasue by the time they estimate the actual cost to repair the frontend damage and add on that the ~$8K to restore airbag integrity in the vehicle.. insurance companies just write them off instead.

Your CRV looks like probably $4-6k+ but it certainly came out on the better end of the impact.

Damn, tell your wife to take it slow on the brakes. It's obviously not her fault bc the Hyundai driver needed to be paying attention but this can happen again with another distracted driver if she's just pushing on the brakes hard to make a stop.
Hopefully your family is okay. Your CRV sure absorbed the impact quite well!

I was rear ended a few years ago. Like this drive, r did not stop. Hit me at about 50 MPH I and another 3 cars had stopped for a red light. The teenager who hit me admitted she was busy trying to get her GPS working and didn't notice traffic had stopped. Nothing to do with how quickly I stopped. In my case $3500 damage. Mainly exhaust system and rear bumper. Her Ford Escort was destroyed. No one hurt so life is good.

 

I think this is all about how vehicles are now designed to meet crash safety tests for passenger safety in the front side crash tests. Traditionally one of the harshest of crashes where passenger safety is concerned.

Depends on the vehicle of course.. but more and more it seems that the front ends are designed to completely self destruct... as well as forward collision triggering an airbag deployment... all to protect the passengers. Whereas the rear ends seem to be more robust (since they don't really need to absorb as much damage to protect occupants (the seats largely do that) and it is unlikely that an airbag would deploy unless the collision resulted in the vehicle getting a secondary collision to the side (like being pushed into a guard rail or similar).

Naturally actual vehicle sizes and types make a difference as well.

 

Rear end collision is always the fault of the rear-ending driver. There are no exceptions, unless it can be shown that you purposely brake blocked. Glad no one was hurt. Make sure the car is checked for a bent subframe/rear suspension. That will always result in a total, regardless of repair cost, as it can not be repaired once knocked out of alignment.

 

I agree. Also, the rear end needs appropriate strength to protect the fuel tank. A good reason to locate the spare behind the fuel tank, as well.

Everyone is fine, wife is saying her neck and shoulder is sore which is from headrest and seat belt. Kids are fine .I have been on the phone with insurance company, dealer and dealer suggest body shop for the most of the time. Body shop wont and cant touch my car until insurance company appraiser check it out so no job before january 03. I have rental for about month worth thru my insurance so will see what after. Insurance company sent me letter saying it is Zero fault on our part, zero deductible so we are good there.

Iam actually surprised how well CRV handle rear impact vs. Hyundai as someone explained here that seems to be true that rear is well protected then front of the car ( Hyundai is write off as I was told) .

In most situations there is little or no defense against a rear end collision. About the only thing you can do is to always stop leaving a little extra room between you and the car ahead of you, to keep from being shoved into that car. But that only works if the car that hits you from behind is not going too fast. I was in one years ago, also while sitting at a light. The drunk driver was doing 70 mph. I was driving, and there were four of us in the car. We all survived but were seriously injured. The other guy fled on foot, though also seriously injured, and was later apprehended. His license had been suspended for multiple DWIs. It did not turn out well for anyone. Luckily things have changed. It took me years to get over being hypervigilant about being rear-ended, though it's not like I'll ever forget it. I count my blessings every day. I'm glad you and yours are safe.

 

My wife was rear ended earlier this year in our new to us '15 CR-V. We had it only a couple months. The person who hit her was driving another CR-V. She had headaches and went to doctor. Spent time with chiropractor for a while too. She works with nurses and they made her go and get it checked out.

The CR-V had close to $5000 (I think it was). Rear shock absorber was replaced, plastic on lower panel if liftgate, and a quarter panel was repainted. It was more extensive than I expected.

Wife was taking kids to Hockey and person rear ended them at about full speed on that street 60 km/h. Hyundai got totaled and Honda CRV got muffler pushed in , bumper wrecked , tailgate dented etc. will see what insurance will say. i got another CRV as loaner while my CRV is being in Hondas garage.

Recently got rear ended on the driver's side myself. Plastic bumper cover was initially distorted but it popped back out on it's own. Had to pull cover partially off to inspect the damage. Found out there was a piece broken off the bracket that the cover snaps onto. Bracket cost me $20 (could have gotten it for $7 but wanted it asap). Will be replacing the broken bracket soon (it is screwed into the body with 4 screws). Body shops wanted $300 - 500 to repair. I have a 2011 CRV. Did not want a cheap replacement bumper cover. They cost about $100 or so online.

Ok, so to appraisal by the Insurance company was completed and total amount for the repairs is $ 10,890 Cad ( $ 8.356.33 USD). The entire repairs will take about 3 weeks and i have rental CRV until the end of the month. Zero cost to me, but still missing my beloved vehicle.

 

One of our '09s got backed into in a parking lot, in the rear. Had to be a car since they went under the bumper and nailed the tie-down loop, which distorted the spare tire well. Since our insurance in this state is the highest in the nation, and our corrupt insurers will raise our rates for five years for even a minor claim, we are leaving it as-is for now and I'll probably see if I can get someone to pull out the kink in the tire well and the bumper mount, and be done with it. From there, I can replace my own bumper cover and lower tailgate garnish (both damaged from another rear-ender a week after we got it in Oct. 2017).

 

So sorry about the accident, but MAJOR kudos for having excellent video of the entire situation. Those cameras paid for themselves several times over that day. Glad everyone is OK.
