Help me convince my wife that a horn upgrade is safe

I love almost everything about our 2024 Sport Touring CR-V, but the stock horn really is pathetic. I'd like to put in an upgrade (as lots of folks here have done successfully) like the one from College Hills Honda, but my wife is worried that it will cause some change in resistance or load or something. She doesn't want to risk jeopardizing the many microelectronic systems in the car. Yes, she's probably being overcautious, but in the name of domestic harmony, I can't go ahead with the upgrade until I get her OK.

She suggested I call the certified technicians from the dealership where we got it. I'm pretty sure there's no way they're going to take the time to approve an aftermarket part that they're neither selling nor installing. Instead, I tried submitting a question to College Hills. They replied very promptly:

We've sold over 1,000 of these without issue. This item is a not an upgrade direct from Honda, so if you have any concerns at all simply pass on the item and stick with what is stock on the vehicle.
That's totally reasonable, but doesn't help at all. Does anyone here have a suggestion about where to get an authoritative assurance that adding a second, aftermarket horn is safe to do?

IMO, merely replacing the stock horn with a louder one would not have any negative effect on the electronics.

As Jackie Gleason said on the Honeymooners, tell your wife you are the king of the castle and she is a lowly peasant girl. That should take care of it.

Get the upgrade kit from College Hills. It is factory approved and designed specifically for this car so she shouldn't have any complaints about it. I put it on mine and it is GREAT. The factory horn is PATHETIC and Honda should be embarrassed and ashamed of what they did there. Good luck.

I always said that the car hangs its head in shame when you blow the OEM horn. The car sounds like a sissy.

You don't need to get a horn from College Hills. Amazon sells plenty of GOOD horns. Only thing wrong with them is you have to wire them in because they don't come with the Honda connectors.

Now our CRV is proud when the horn is blown.

Put in the horn you want. I vote for the loudest, most obnoxious horn you can endure. There was a time I found honking on a horn altered a driver's behavior. Not so much now.

An entirely anecdotal story. You may be familiar with the biker saying, "Loud pipes saves lives." I heard "informed" opinions that contradict that saying. One day riding on a surface street, I saw a Harley Davidson in the driver's side view mirror. He was far enough behind me that I couldn't hear him with my windows up. He was riding alone.

I lost track of him until he came up on my left side. His pipes were so loud they made me jump. I was cursing as he came by. While I wasn't changing lanes, I looked over my left shoulder and there was an unmodified, quiet street bike in my blind spot.

I never say the quiet bike until loud pipes made me look around.

Make you new horn loud enough to be certain people must pay attention. We are honking to make new friends.

If it matches the current electrical required by your standard horn, there is no reason for concern.

I replaced the stock high tone horn in my CRV touring hybrid with a dual tone (high and low) with parts ordered from Amazon and they work fine with no issues to date!

My brother installed a really loud horn in his Jeep a long time ago. To prevent any problems as you describe, he used a "horn relay". Basically, the existing horn circuitry operated the relay, which in turn provided power to the horn. You should be able to the same and be able to use any horn that your car's battery can operate. The microelectronic systems she is worried about are fairly isolated from each other, given you have a 2024, nearly everything in that vehicle is controlled using the CAN bus and probably optoisolated from everything else. You have little to worry about.

That said, I would add a louder horn with a separate control so you could still have a more "civil" horn to wake people up at green lights vs. a "you are about to pull out in front of me" horn.
