How do I tag MP3 files to play in the order I want, not in some randomly selected one?

(vehicle is a 2024 Hybrid Touring edition with 9 inch screen and 12 speaker Bose sound system)

I've made a USB stick with some music, all MP3's.

There are several folders, each labelled by the artists or bands name. IE: Abba, The Who, etc.
Inside each of those folders, are selected MP3 files, that have the song name followed by .mp3

When I insert the stick into the USB port and then select audio input as USB, the display provide a number of options for me, like Artist, Album, etc. So, I select Albums, but do not see all of the folders on the stick. Here's a screen cap of things, so that I can explain.

While I am supposed to be seeing the album called "The Warning", what the system displays to me, is this, rather than The Warning MP3 files that are supposed to be inside that folder.

Can anyone tell me the correct way to label each MP3 file. Do I do it like this for example?

001 - The Warning - Disciple.mp3
002 - The Warning - Evolve.mp3

I presume that I would then do a similar thing inside each of the Album folders.

All I want to do, is be able to select an album, then have the system play the music inside, in the order that the files are, at least as I seem them on the USB stick.

Help please! This is the first vehicle I've owned that has offered me the option of connecting a USB stick for playing music.

Hi
I've got a 2019 so the head unit is not the same but on first use I had the same frustrating issue that you have. The solution maybe similar? I have my tunes on the flash drive in the following order... Artist then within that folder, Albums and then within that folder songs in the right order. I also use prefix 01,02,03 etc just to stop alphabetical listing! I have the songs listed as just the song title within the album folder. On the 2019 model head unit having selected USB as the source there is a folder option as well as album. If you've got that option use that instead of album. It will display your tunes in the same order as your flash drive. Hope that helps?!

Hey, thanks for that information. I’m going to try that.

All I really want it to have the head unit display are the folders, by name of the artist, then inside of that, the songs, by name. I’ll try placing a number in front of each song, such as 01 - 02 03, then the name of the song, so that at least they play in that order (although even that doesn’t really matter that much).

I’ve also wondered if there is a way to tell the head unit which songs, I want to be part of a ‘Playlist”, so that I can just choose a particular playlist, and let it go from there. As it is now, I may have only one song in a folder (name of artist/band) and then in other folder, have 12 songs in a folder.
I’d like to be able to go from folder to folder without having to touch the head unit, and instead use the steering wheel control. I’m guessing that can’t happen though, unless all I have on the USB stick are songs, numbered, and no folders. (ie: 001 to 250)

Apologies for being such a pain with the questions, but I tried Googling this and got a lot of rather complicated answers, none of which were specific to Honda.

It's not really a Honda issue, it's how you handle the folders on the flash drive. If you just want a playlist all you do is name a folder "Playlist" and put the songs you want in it. If you want them in a particular order then start first song prefix one and so on. If you want a playlist of only one artist just name it "Artist" playlist and do the same thing. I have mine set so it will play albums. You need a folder for each artist within your music folder. Then within each artist folder you need your album folders. (One for each album labelled by the album title) Then within each album folder all the songs from that album prefixed 01,02 etc just to make sure you get them in the right order. If you're not set up this way it's a time consuming process to do it but once your there it's very straightforward to add any future albums. As far as steering wheel controls go I think you can only skip tracks? On the head unit you can skip folders. Also if you find any tracks missing they may be in a different format. I had a load missing then realised they were FLAC. It doesn't play uncompressed audio like FLAC and WAV.

It's not that difficult. Where do you store your tunes? Another idea...have you tried Android Auto or Carplay? There's an app I use called Musicolet. It's a free music player. No ads! Only works offline. It will play most audio formats known to man and maybe a few more. Download onto your phone and it will play from phone storage or SD card. You still need the correct hierarchy of folders but the display is better.

I know this is a late reply but I'm hoping it might do someone some good. A while back as I was loading music onto a new NAS drive I came across the same thing. I'd copy files, check the folder, and find them not in the correct order.

I discovered that some file systems don't include the metadata that retains the correct play order. After a little bit of looking around I decided to convert my files to .flac format and - problem solved. Additionally, I found the audio to be much better with flac over mp3.
