Importing 2017 EX-L from Canada to the USA

Hey everyone!

Tried doing a quick search, and haven't seen anyone in a similar situation so reaching out to the community to see if anyone has an idea!.

I have a 2017 CR-V EX-L that was purchased here in Canada. I am moving to the US for 3 years, and looking to import the vehicle. I spoke with Honda America, and they provided me with a compliance letter that essentially states they "do not believe the vehicle is eligible for importation" for 2 reasons. One being the Theft Prevention Standard, even though the vehicle has theft prevention measure in place, as well stating that they cannot confirm that the TPMS complies with performance standard requirements. I'm a little frustrated with Honda at this point as I did not have this issue with Toyota, where they just clearly told me I don't have TPMS (Camry) and hence wouldn't be able to. The CR-V has both theft protection and TPMS, so I don't know what their issue is, and what I can do to resolve this.

Has anyone successfully imported this model from Canada to the US? If so any chance of getting some help?

Thank you all in advance!

I would think there would be no problem importing it. Check out snowbirdadvisor.ca for more info. Or just google it.
I have done it the other way, US car to Canada, several times. I just had to have it certified that it meets all Canadian standards, Canadian Tire is the authorized provider, they actually do it for free.

Main question or concern to check/confirm .... what are the emissions standards in Canada, and how will they comply with US emissions standards.. particularly in the 13 states that use California's strictest standards. What, if any, hurdles will you face importing the car to the destination state.

Secondarily.. with all the squirrely tarrifs and restrictions by the US right now on anything imported from another country (including Canada) .. do any of these play a factor in cost, permitting, compliance certification, etc for what you want to do as an individual. I'm sure the fact that Honda manufactures CRVs in Canada for the US market.. you may have some leverage there.

Heh.. in other words.. know your battlefield before entering battle, and have plans to mitigate any challenges. :)

The vehicle meets EPS standards in the US. There aren't any tarrifs on the vehicle because it is made in Canada and as per CBP website any vehicles made in Mexico, Canada, or the US is exempt from the 2.5% tarrif. As for getting it registered, I need to show border permits that show that I have legally imported the vehicle, which is the issue I'm facing with Honda as of now, as even though the vehicle has the aforementioned features, they aren't willing to take responsibility.

May we assume that you mean EPA rather than EPS? I believe EPS stands for Earnings Per Share.

Regardless, I am sure you are not the first person wanting to do this, and there must be an agency or some support available to you. Have you contacted the state DMV or MVD where you will live in the US? Perhaps they can offer some guidance or contact info.

A quick search brought me to this, but I'm sure you have already seen it.

Sorry JB in AZ, yes I meant EPA!

It'll be going to Florida, I'll give up the DMV there a call and see what they say! I was just able to find the information for the border requirements, so maybe the DMV can provide more insight. Thank you all!!
