We cant know if its worth it to you. Only you can determine whether that cost is acceptable. Also, that system age is unsupported/now obsolete.

 

I wouldn't pay money to update a system that old.
I'd use a phone or a standalone nav unit.

 

Absolutely not. The actual map data is always two years old at the time of release and do they even update this old models now?

It's a nice navigation unit tho.

 

Having driven a new Volvo SUV in Belgium with onboard navigation that tried to send me through closed construction areas and now closed pedestrian streets I would never opt for onboard navigation over something like Google Map. Just not worth it, especially in an area that you are not familiar with.

True, I once updated my Toyota's map to the latest version and then almost took an exit on the Autobahn, there was a permanent barrier installed.

I’m not a fan and would never pay to upgrade. The onboard sat nav is an excellent device if you want a trip down memory lane to see what sections of the road system looked like 15 years ago. Even the interface looks kind of Atari console based. I’m not sure what the procedure is for highlighting map anomalies but I reckon I’d have a full time career reporting real time differences. Maybe it’s a localised issue as I live in Scotland but Google maps seems to be spot on and they win my vote.

Yes its a simple update to newer roads and corrected navigations of streets that are no rerouted, due to congestion issues. Maps are already laid out, they are everyday being updated, ifapps on a smartphone Wze is one good app but, planning out, knowing in advance wins over electronic navigations.

I use WAZE. It lets you know where accidents police with breakdowns and even potholes here in the northeast.

 

Potholes? I got an "Object in Road" warning that turned out to be an oak dining table.
I agree, Waze is great, at least for me. Others may have different needs though.
I really don't need "Nav", it's rare for me to not know where I'm going, but I like the real-time alerts.

 

2017 CRV EX-L Turbo with Nav. Worth of a map update depends upon where you drive. My understanding is that they are just adding new streets; such as a new street built for a new Costco or an old minor road that has been newly mapped. If you drive the same street locations or just major roadways & seldom go anywhere new you are not likely to get benefit from a navigation update.

I have found very few roadways on which I travel which are not always in the navigation database. One was a newly built street at a new Costco. Another was what was likely a county maintained road in Texas which had a small brown or bronze road name marker and which went to a school stadium where they were giving Covid vaccinations. I was able to look them up online and once I found them I was able to set a navigational location of something nearby. Another peculiarity was on a section of IH-10 in the Houston area that Nav did not recognize as IH-10, a major roadway, but which was locally recognized as East Freeway & East Freeway is what was in Nav. I doubt that the East Freeway to IH-10 change would be done even on updates. There have been a couple of other minor roadways not found but overall, not updating the Nav has not been a significant issue for me.

On the other hand, if done during the warranty period and it is a free update then do it. I just wish Honda would make it easier to do your own Nav update & give full instructions for where the connection is located & how to do it. It seems to me that they don't want the driver doing the update.

Waze is okay, as you, the Person adds the warnings at hand, you may get people adding warnings not on target, but as you are doing so you are not paying attention to what you're supposed to do, "Drive", you're helping others only in your area of the route, and that is where waze is good/bad.

Play safe, be safe then get caught and fined for playing with the phone, all I am saying

 

I only use Waze for highway trips and I set it up ahead of time so I don't have to do anything.
Granted this means I may not be "contributing" input, but as you say safety first.
If I have a passenger, they can report stuff to Waze to their heart's content.

 

Phone off the dash I hope. and not below, looking, even glancing at the Infotainment is a distraction, as many here, you see for 30 seconds they drive looking down.

 

Phone is in my pocket, or at home. I just don't use a phone while driving.
In the rare cases when I use Waze for Nav I have the turn by turn directions on the dash, not the center head unit. A little less distracting.

 

the Honda nav is not 100% Par. If a road is being closed, the system should alert you, does it? there are times any gps system will Fail/alert you of a detoured bridge closed, when the route has been planned from Point A.

Is it worth updating, the answer is no. IMHO for me

 

If you need a "system" to tell you a road is closed allow me to suggest reading signs.
Blaming an electronic nav system for your own failure to pay attention to what's happening around you is not the solution to closed roads.
YOU are the "Nav System".

 

When you are on back roads and that bridge is closed it can be at the bridges entrance. due to no signs by the county.

Maybe.
But as the driver YOU are directly responsible for, and are the final authority as to, the safe operation of the vehicle.
You simply cannot transfer that responsibility to an electronic device.
It's like if a satellite falls from orbit and hits a ship and sinks it. Whose fault is it? The Captain's. Period.
Maybe the Captain couldn't avoid it, but it's still his fault.

captain who sank the ship hmm are you referring to that one in 2012 in Costa Concordia. back to the topic about updated maps think the new member will have a lot to siff through in order to decide for themselves , is it worth updating what has been around for a long time. then to have cables and devices in the car.

Updates are important. but some may not want to update: Again car is getting older, and you need to be updated, the question can be asked when is End of life for the 2014 hondas radio system? And only then can we have the answer, is it worth updating a system? Can the owner when returns update the Headunit to a newer version, and they still need to update the system as they go down the road.

I also wonder when you go to the dealer, buy that new car, something you can ask the salesperson, but its shown above, you get free updates and its the Persons choice to do so or not.

with apps out there some love older OS then new ones. and are used to the old stuff, but that is what keeps the brain going Change

Approx once per year.

Honda vehicles with Garmin Navigation come with either 3 (2021 Honda North America vehicles and newer) or 5 years (all other model years and regions) of map updates at no cost. These map updates are available roughly once per calendar year.

 

I just purchased mine and installed it and can tell you with 100% certainty to NOT buy this. It literally didn’t make a single difference on my system and just paid $200 for absolutely nothing!
