Sometimes the steering locking mechanism gets jammed.
The steering wheel might be in a position
which is preventing the steering locking mechanism from turning
It might help to turn the steering wheel to free it up and turn the key at the same time??

Other times, the pins in the lock itself stick or jam in the cylinder.
WD-40 spray into the lock may help? Working the key in and out??
Also, check the key for damage??

And then there are times, the gear selector prevents the key from turning.
It happens when the gear selector is not properly aligned with the selected gear.
Or, it can happen when the battery is dead (rare to happen this way).

So you do not tell us what you did last, care to share what you did when you were preparing to finish the ride?

incorrect shut down can cause the issue you are experiencing, some force to the turning of the wheel, then turning the key, while keeping the pressure on the wheel..

My 2007 Ridgeline suffered the same issue. The internal lock mechanism was worn-out. I was able to start/drive by fiddling with the key and nudging the steering wheel L & R...

The dealership (an excellent one) said the only way to fix the issue was to change out the starting lock with an new one which would be keyed differently for $700.00+/- and I would now have TWO keys...

On the Ridgeline forums there were others that had the same issue. Following others advise I placed calls to locksmith shops until I found one with an AUTO lock specialist.

This locksmith changed out the worn parts, kept the lock functioning with the original key and it was $70.00.

Best of luck!

I remember my Chevy Beretta, I was able to start the car, and anytime I wanted, remove the key, today the keys are better made, and I have my 2010 toyota where I can do everything but lock my driver door as one part must have worn out o the key, so it can be like said possibly the key just gave out of many uses. more today its a fob, battery weakens need a new one not a key, so does the old fashion key last forever, no.

Am new to the forum. I will add another possibility. When my 2001 CRV had a similar issue, the service tech said the key may be worn, and it was. Went to a spare key and problem solved, at least in this case, for a while. Not that other issues wouldn't have appeared down the road, wear and tear.
