Lubricate steering column bushing

Hello,

1999 Honda CR-V manual AWD. A few years ago I had all of the bushings replaced. I believe this included a steering column bushing. Not long after that job was done the steering wheel squeaked when turning, annoying but acceptable. Then after a while the squeak grows to include slight jostles to the car, which is close to unbearable. I had my mechanic check it out and they sprayed some lubricant on the bushing and it took care of it. Now it's 6 months later and the squeak is back. I'd like to spray it myself and save money but I don't know where the bushing is or where the best spot to spray or what the best product to use.

Does anyone have any experience with this that can advise me?

Thanks!
Thom

Can you hear it in the steering column?

If so, spray some silicone lubricant where the column goes through the firewall. Do both the interior side and the engine side.

Might be helpful to have an assistant turn the steering wheel while you look at the engine bay side...

What exactly do you mean by jostles the car? Like a vibration?
And is the squeak on the inside of the car? Or outside?
My steering wheel squeaks when cold outside in the morning, but on the interior of the car. Haven't looked into the issue much as it only gets cold enough a couple months of the year here to cause it. That sounds like it isn't the same as your problem though, right?

Ah I'm sorry for my ambiguous language. I mean that when the car is jostled, like going over a bump, braking to cause the car to lean forward and rock, or simply pushing down on the car while it's off with my weight, causes a squeak.

The squeak is outside the car. I believe it's in the steering system. When the mechanic sprayed some sort of lubricant on the bushing(s) in that system the squeaks went away (for about 6 months). I plan to ask them if they will show me where they spray but was hoping to figure it out with internet help.

I suggest find out what lubricant is best (probably silicone spray?) and get under there with a spray can that has one of those red straws and spray it into every bushing.

I cross referenced that part number with its OEM equivalent and it brings up a part that is only for late 90s preludes. Which is a little strange, but whatever- rock auto lists it as Gen 1 CRV compatible part ¯\(ツ)

Either way- it’s part 5 in the image below. Though I’d imagine that’s a prelude diagram. May require crawling under your car and trying to ID the equivalent on our CRVs

I would suggest not to take out the steering cover yet. If you can get someone to help you listen where it squeaks it could be the joints that goes thru the firewall. what year is your v? Trim model? you can use hondapartsnow.com to check for parts diagram where you can find the joints.
