Hi all,

Thought I would do a custom analysis for us of some NHTSA data on Gen5s. This crosses a couple of hot topics. Play nicely.

Data Considerations:
  • Model Years and Plants are parsed from reported VINs.
  • I removed all Air Bag complaints b/c they skewed data quite a bit.
  • Dates are not reported dates, but dates that "reported Failure" occurred (NHTSA parlance). Failure date is almost always < reported date, so its going to be a little more accurate.
  • As i said in a different thread, these should be interpreted with all the caveats that these are self reported issues, not issues confirmed by the respective manufacturers.
  • NHTSA data is available here for download - be aware its about a gig compressed.
  • Complaint rates are an industry standard to compare events with different underlying frequency distributions. By using complaint rates, you can look across manufacturers that sell wildly different numbers of cars.

Total complaint rates for CRV vs. Competition, complaints of any type
(3 month moving average, # of complaints reported to NHTSA / Monthly US Reported Sales)

I absolutely love my CRV, but I cannot help but be impressed at what Toyota has accomplished with the Rav4, its half of everyone else right now.

Reported Engine, Fuel, Powertrain and "Other" incidents related to "Oil" for CRVs only, by VIN Model Year.

Both Model Year 17s and 18s are receiving oil complaints. There is a seasonal pattern here that predicts that in 12/18 or early 01/19 we'll see complaint rates pick up. If that doesn't happen, then one explanation could be that the issue is resolved on new cars.

Reported Engine, Fuel, Powertrain and "Other" incidents related to "Oil" for CRVs only, by VIN Plant.

We can conclude that it is not isolated to one specific plant. However, since we don't know production volumes at each plant, we also can't say whether it is truly more likely to occur in cars from one plant vs. another.

Reported Engine, Fuel, Powertrain and "Other" incidents related to "Oil" for CRVs only, by State.

Total complaints is 89. We don't know how many CRVs are sold per state, so its a bit difficult to draw any conclusions from this.
