Nightmare of P2646

Hi everyone! I've been driving my '06 CRV for over a year now and have been encountering an issue with the P2646 code, and wanted to know what everyone's thoughts are.

Around March of last year, the check engine light (P2646), VSA, and one that I would describe as a triangle with an exclamation mark all turned on. I took it to the mechanic and they managed to fix some things and turn off the check engine and VSA, but the triangle with the exclamation mark light stayed on. After another 3 months, the CEL and VSA also turned back on, with the same issue. I took it to another mechanic, where I got the solenoid swapped and an oil change, and that seemed to fix the problem. Then a couple months later, the same 3 light turned and this time I took it to my local Honda dealer, where they changed the oil pressure switch and cleared the codes. Problem solved for another couple months. When they turned on again, I drove the car around for about a week and they cleared on their own. I added solvent to clear the engine of any sludge and then did an oil change.

Most of the time, the P2646 appears about every 3 months (2-3000 miles), but after this last oil change (switched from regular to synthetic) back in February, the CEL has been coming on more often. It turns on and may last a couple hours to a few days, and then clear and be okay for about a week, and repeat.

Many thanks in advance!

Make sure there are no oil leaks at both vtec solenoid an vtec solenoid pressure switch O rings. Or anywhere around those 2. Take a look at the engines oil pressure switch as well.
As you may know the code means there is an engine oil pressure difference between the ecu preset value and vtec solenoid pressure switch.

What oil weight are you using now?
Some synthetic engine oils tend to run a bit thinner than normal under certain conditions.
If oil changes have been neglected in the past then chances are there is still some old varnished engine oil flowing through the system.
Try to look at the electrical connector at the vtec solenoid presdure switch, make sure everything is tight and that there is no sign of corrosion at any of the terminals, both at the switch and connector plug.
BTW there is a bulletin concerning that code but given you replaced the presdure switch I would rule that out.

I used 5W-20 synthetic in the last oil change, which is the same weight I used for the regular oil. I did notice that with synthetic, the CEL turned on much sooner than with the regular oil.

I'll try looking at the electrical connectors at the vtec solenoid pressure switch this weekend and see if they look corroded.

Well, just wanted to close the loop on this. We ended up using an engine oil with a higher viscosity than what Honda recommended and the light hasn't turned back on. It's been about 7 months now and it's been running great.
