i got this car 3 weeks ago. I bought it from somebody selling it outside of their mechanics shop. It was slightly over priced for the age and mileage but it was a good example and serviced frequently. I was fed up of buying cars with problems so i spent a bit more for the service history. Even though its 250000 kms.
The mechanic said he checked it over for me and said it was all good. He installed a new fuel pump 4 months ago. I think its a spectra brand from looking at it. Its quite loud and gets progressively louder below half a tank of fuel. A howling sound you can notice when idling but not when moving. When i test drove the car i just assumed that was the sound the differential made because ive never had an awd. so i changed the diff fluid and then discovered its my fuel pump. he said that i should never let the fuel drop velow half a tank to keep fuel pumps cool and lubricated. Although the woman who sold it admitted she paid him a few hundred dollars to sell it at his garage.
Yesterday i got a check engine light.
So today i took it to the mechanic and he said oh its just an EVAP code its probably just an emissions leak that doesnt effect the reliability or safety in his words and wiped the code. It came back on after 15 mins of driving.
He said the fuel pump sounds alright and that he's heard a lot louder pumps last for years. hmm.
So my questions to you guys are,
Have you ever had a problem like this?
How did you fix it?
Is this guy talking crap?
What do you think it is and what should i check?
could it be that theres a vacuum leak letting air get sucked into the pump making it loud?
This truly sucks. I got this car because the last one i bought had a weird clutch problem (long story) when i bought it so i wanted something reliable.
