Oil Level Question

Just did the first oil change on my 2019 EX...has the 1.5T. Drained pan and replaced filter. Put in EXACTLY 3.7 quarts (assuming my unopened jug of oil really had 5 quarts in it...it's now at 1.3). Drove around for a while, got engine nice and hot. When I check level after five minutes or so it reads just above the lower mark, which seems low. Yes, level surface, etc., etc...

Shouldn't it be at or close to the top mark? What am I missing?

Also what is the volume difference between the lower and upper marks? On our 02 Odyssey I know it was one quart.

These 1.5 turbo engines seem to be notorious for getting fuel in the oil and increasing the level. The oil was above the high mark when we got our car. We just did an oil change too and I purposely filled it to just above the low mark, I'm hoping that starting low will account for the rise due to fuel over time.

Quit with the scaremongering. The OP made NO reference to fuel in the oil

The OD issue has been fixed and is not prevalent on 2020 cars and all cars prior to that are able to have the fix applied if they havent had it done already. A sticky thread to OD issues is on the 5th Gen forum too.

As an FYI to members, any OD-related posts on this thread will be removed without warning as they wont be relevant at all.

Congrats on the change out. when you checked the Oil after adding in a quick start not running on the road, where was the Oil at? You mentioned you road the car and stayed at low?

1. I add an ounce or two LITTLE, wipe, wipe measure. and if it is above and Below, that be fine.

Update. I added a minor amount of oil and drove the car again. This morning, having had all night for oil to drain into pan, level is about 2/3 of the way up on the dipstick. So I'm guessing I'm still about 10 oz. low. I'll keep a close eye on it.

I see where the instructions say you will need a special wrench for the oil filter.

I see where it says a special wrench is required for the oil filter. I'm getting close to doing my first oil change and don't want any surprises. Unless the factory filter has some odd ball design I know I have the right size wrench for the Fram filter I'm putting on.

I have changed the oil and filter on our 1.5 L turbo 4 times. I put in 3.5 quarts measured using the marks on the side of a 5 quart jug. After sitting overnight the oil is right on the full mark. The oil that remains in the engine after draining makes up the.2 difference.

I am only one of many so statistically may not be significant at all but my car‘s oil was filled to the top line when I picked it up last December. 8,000 km (nearly 5,000 miles) later..very low for me on account of covid..still at top line.. I have mixture of lots of short trips and occasional longer (1,000 km) longer trip. On account of this forum I have checked levels many times, minimal fuel smell, obviously no fuel dilution. Happy with the car, no issues at all.

Good to hear. Not a fan of turbocharged engines for longevity though. Time will tell if the Honda turbo will last at least 100,000 miles or more. Let's see how long those direct injectors last also. Anyone out there know the price of those injectors & the labor charge to replace them?

In a warm engine.. any fuel in the oil vaporizes and is purged as normal part of the very robust PCV system in these 1.5T engines.

This was the problem in the early days of the gen5s... the engine being so efficient it literally could not warm up fully to temperature in very cold weather. Hence the TSB by Honda and the factory tuning changes to adjust engine timing so the 1.5T warms up more easily, even in very cold weather.

Now.. for some data to support my statements. Gasoline vaporizes at 140 degrees. The first tick mark on the temperature gauge on the CRV is.....wait for it.....139-142 degrees (per owner measurement several different ways. The normal gauge position at fully warm (just under the halfway mark) has been measure by owners at 175-195 degrees (yes the gauge once at the full warm mark does not move again until the temperature exceeds 210 degrees).

It is as if the Honda engineers did their homework here and set the temperature gauge to begin showing tick marks on the gauge at the point where fuel vaporizes and the PCV system begins it's work. :)

It is really hard to read the oil level on the CRV due to the orange on the dipstick. I would take several measurements just to make sure that what you are seeing is accurate. You could also leave everything as it is for a few hundred miles and then when the oil gets darker it will be a lot easier to see. This works for me -- but then again I don't change my own oil I just check it frequently. Good luck to you.

Thanks, that's kind of what I figured. I'm getting ready to turn 1700 miles and it says I'm at 60 percent. I'm thinking I may do the first time change when it says 50 percent. After that I think I will do every 5,000 miles like I have been doing for years with all my other vehicles.

Always check the oil on a cold engine and change it on a hot engine. The reason is due to the oil still being in the engine and it has not fully drained into the pan. The dip stick reads the pan level. ... and Honda switched to a plastic dip stick? What? Fake leather in the Ody and plastic dip stick? What is going on... someone needs to give them a good tune up lol.
