Rear wiper auto-activation in reverse?

I’m working my way through the Owners’ Tome and online references. Found a comment on a site that sells bike carriers: the rear wipers come on automatically in reverse and will be destroyed by this bike carrier. So I checked my Tome and on page 200, sure enough it says something about it. “When you put the transmission into R with the windshield wipers activated, the rear wiper operates automatically as follows even if its switch is off” followed by an informative graphic which seems to say if the front wipers are set for INT or AUTO, the rear wiper will turn on intermittently, and if the front wipers are set for LO or HI it will operate continuously.

There is nothing on the “Automatic Intermittent Wipers” page about the rear wiper, just a reminder to turn off the Auto setting before driving through a car wash. Am I understanding this correctly?

1. With front wipers set to Auto, the front wipers will activate once, then go into a waiting mode and activate again if the car detects “rain”.
2. The rear wiper will not automatically activate in the rain unless it has been turned on via its separate control.
3, BUT, if you have the front wiper set to anything except Off, and shift into reverse - say, to back out of a garage or parking spot - the rear wiper will start up whether it is raining or not. So if there is anything like a bike carrier attached to the rear windshield area, be sure to turn the FRONT wipers to OFF before driving.

Do I understand this correctly? The rear wiper won’t come on, even in the rain, unless I turn it on? And it will come on if I put the car into reverse, even if it’s turned off, if the front wipers are set to INT, LO, HI,or AUTO - anything but Off?

I think if I attach such a carrier I will at least put a sticker on it reminding me to turn off the main wipers, and hope that it doesn’t start raining when I’m biking.

As I recall, my rear wiper on my 2017 Touring follows exactly the same process, and based on the same systems and settings... though I also have automatic wiper settings and a rain sensor that appears to address both front and rear glass, depending on the setting of the transmission gear selector. This is for safety reasons. Honda wants you to have a clear view out of your rear glass when backing up in bad weather. Honda knows that some owners simply cannot be bothered to do this manually for their own safety... so they do it for you.

There may or may not be a way to disable it, but I'm going to guess not.

yes, hitch mounted styles. nothing touches the car.

or, roof mounted ones.
Dealer won’t install a hitch because the hybrid CR-V isn’t rated for towing. I’m researching third party hitches to see if there’s a good option that won’t interfere with the auto lift tailgate or the warranty. Plus, it will take me some time to get up the nerve to cut into my new car. There are roof racks, but lifting a bike onto the roof isn’t nice to damaged rotator cuffs. I could see carrying a small stepladder around for bike days, maybe. I have a surface mount carrier that might work.

Correct.

So your best bet is to reverse with your front wipers off.

Safety/visibility caveat emptor and all that....
