My honda crv- ex was an absolute dream car... that was untill i tried getting gas from an unfamiliar gas station and from that point on Im now haunted with the “check fuel cap” warning on my dash almost constantly, i have no engine light, and have never been one to top off when getting gas, once the pump stops thats it.
ive read some other threads about it possibly being a solenoid issue but these threads were on older models.
we’ve replaced the gas cap with a new one from advance. And it didnt even improve the situation. The seal area looks brand new and we wiped it out just for good measure.
Don’t want to sell a kidney for honda to fix it, anybody have any solutions?
my car is very low mileage around 81,000.

While driving my car today the yellow wrench light came on (assuming service light). So the situation has changed a little.
Does anyone know how to check and see if the solenoid is bad?

-UPDATE-
The issue after all was the canister purge solenoid. We changed it, the warning came up once, and never again. Ive even changed back to the original fuel cap with smooth sailing.

Aside from the usual advice about checking the piping and sealing surfaces for nicks/gouges which you have done, You may be obligated to have the issue diagnosed at a garage with a tester. OR a dealer.

There are many repeated complaints that aftermarket caps don't work as well as OEM. Just saying.

The 2011 is in the third generation, 2007-2011, so the numerous threads here apply. Fuel caps almost never go bad. The warning is there to make certain the cap has been properly tightened (to three clicks). If it's not tightened enough, it will issue the warning. If you get the fuel cap message enough times, your malfunction indicator light (aka "check engine" light) will display.

The solenoid is maybe $45 aftermarket, maybe $75 or so for genuine Honda. That's most likely your issue right there. Add labor cost if you can't replace it yourself. I can do it in a half hour. (I'm a frequent flier for that repair now. 😁)

The gasoline fill-up was a coincidence. Some solenoids can weaken over time (like in one of our 2009s, where it'd display the message a few times per month, until it became almost constant), or they could also fail suddenly--when I bought my '09 used over four years ago, the solenoid was bad when I bought it. In both cases, the solenoid was the fix.

Do you recommend getting name brand honda or off brand (autozone etc) solenoids?
