What is the average RPMs when in 5th gear going 70mph? Mine runs at 35000rpms is this normal? I am used to driving an automatic V8 so it sounds like I am running my engine into the ground! Also, my car is at 149,000 miles and misfires at idle? Help!!! Disheartened:(

That is about what mine runs at going 70 in 5th. You have to remember that this is a 4 cylinder engine. It has to rev higher to put out the same power. It is working harder to keep the car at 70mph. The engines are made to rev higher also, so you aren't doing damage by running at 3500.

Well if it only misfires at idle that kinda rules out some things but generally these are the things to look at with a misfire:

  • Spark Plugs
  • Spark Plug Wires
  • Distributor Cap
  • Distrubutor Rotor
  • Spark Coil
  • Valve clearence
  • Air Cleaner
  • Fuel Pump
  • Fuel Filter

But, as far as I know those things would cause a misfire under load, not at idle. Are you sure it is misfiring and it just isn't the way the engine sounds while idling? You mentioned that you just picked it up, maybe that is what the engine sounds like?

The manual CRVs have a shorter geared transmission like a sports car. So 5th gear isn't a powerless overdrive gear it is another power gear. This helps city fuel economy a bit since I can be in 5th around 40 mph easily. My GSR Integra had over 200,000 miles, did 4k at 80mph and reved to 8k through VTEC regularly. Honda engines are rev happy and you shouldn't worry about holding rpm at 4k or even higher but the CRV gets poor fuel economy the faster you go with wind drag. As far as your misfire goes, if you're not getting a check engine light then your plugs are probably worn out. My Civic puttered at idle and eventual threw a code but I just replaced plugs and it was golden.
