Subwoofer Install

Hey everyone! After a while of listening to a fairly dated sound system in my 02 CRV, I decided to experiment and upgrade the lacking bass first. I wanted to share this because it seems to be a bit of a challenge to have a relatively stealthy subwoofer setup in our cars. I ended up getting pretty lucky with the fitment, considering I used an old amp that I had sitting around. Nonetheless, it sounds awesome. So here goes.

I purchased a 10 inch Alphasonik subwoofer on Amazon. It came in a sealed down-firing enclosure and ran me $150. Being rated at 400 watts RMS(1200 max), I was left with the decision of an old Sony 1252gtr or a new amplifier. The Sony amp maxed out at 800 watts, pushing out about 350 RMS. Mind you, this is in bridged mode at 4 ohms. I ended up only using one channel which is only rated to provide 180 watts rms. I figured I’d try it out and get a bigger one if I needed but it sounds just right to me. As for the install, I managed to nicely fit both the amp and the sub box in the open spare tire tub underneath the table in the rear. The fit was snug, but perfect. It took me a while to figure out how I’d get the wires into that tub, given the table sits on the edges of the whole thing. I noticed that right in the middle of the front end of the tub that it dipped down a bit. I managed to drill holes large enough to fit all the wires through, leaving plenty of space for the table to just make its way overtop of the wires; not pinching them at all. As for securing the enclosure and the amplifier, I used heavy duty Velcro. The amplifier is held in by heavy duty strips that stick to the tub and the amp, and velcro together for a secure and easily removable installation. After this, I wrapped the subwoofer enclosure with a velcro strap, and used the heavy duty strips to hold the straps down. In turn, holding down the box as well. This all fits perfectly underneath the table. Now for the cost. I didn’t cheap out on the wiring kit, making sure it was oxygen free. So the subwoofer and amplifier wiring kit costed $220 from Amazon. I highly recommend this or something similar. Big difference. Thanks!!

I hear a slight rattle when the volume is very high but of course, that’s the case with most systems... especially in a Honda. Moderate volumes give a great solid deep tone without any rattles at all. It sounds so much better. However, I am only giving the subwoofer around 200 watts. So I would be weary of going much higher cause I’m sure you’d run into an issue if so. I’m also thinking about using some of that Velcro stuff on the edges of the table to secure it a bit better as well.

Also, the table fits without touching any new components. That said, the latch in the rear of the table holds it down fairly well.
