hi, just thought i'd see if you all know what the culprit might be before i take the interior panel off. my '99 tailgate will only open if i pull the handle with one hand and squeeze the door with the other. what i do is put my palm on the top of the tailgate above the handle (the hatch is open) and compress the outer and inner panels. the door latches and locks/unlocks fine. what should i be looking at to fix this so i don't need to squeeze the door anymore?

First action is to lubricate the tailgate latch. Start with a light oil, then work it in...then follow up with a dry graphite lube like Lock-Ease.
You might also want to take off the license plate garnish so you can have a look at the actual door handle on the back door. It could be that something is seized or loose in there, and needs to be replaced.
