Tailgate Lift Support Struts - Exploded

Hello all. So I have a 2017 CRV EX with 82K on it. I did purchase the 120K Mile warranty on this car. The other day I opened the tailgate and the right rear strut exploded. It sounded like a gun shot and blew into pieces in the driveway. I closed the trunk and opened it and the left strut blew threw top portion of the trunk and broke the top spoiler above the tailgate on that side. I have duct tape holding it on for now.

So since I have the 120K mile warranty do you think this would be covered? To me it seems to be defective and really could have hurt someone shooting down into the driveway like it did. I did not call Honda yet or a dealer. I read the contract and it did not seem like this part was mentioned.

Thanks for any input.!

Love to see a picture of the mess it created. I think two things. Honda should be happy nobody was hurt. And pay to fix it.
Plus I recommend you report this defect on the NHTSA website
I agree, report it to NHTSA, it's clearly "Safety Related".
But it's also quite rare, if you can get any sort of manufacturer info, part or lot number etc., it might help narrow down the potential "victims".
I've seen those gas shocks on cars, planes, boats and other things for decades, but I've never seen, or even heard of until now, one exploding.

We can't tell you what your warranty terms are. I will say that hatch support struts are a wear item, not expensive, and easy to replace (takes a small flathead screwdriver, nothing more.) Even at full dealer retail, it's all of $50 for the pair. If your warranty has a deductible, I wouldn't bother.

EDIT: Just saw your description of the collateral damage... okay, that's worth a warranty claim.

Hello all. Just to followup here. Honda DID replace the stays for me under the extended warranty. It took months for the parts to come in but we are good. I did need to pay for the clips holding the spoiler in place as well as the labor to replace because when the stays exploded one of them pushed through and broke the clips. $180

Thanks for the feedback.
