Transmission Fluid Change Interval

Hello, I have recently purchased a 2015 Honda CRV at 34,700 miles on it. I have purchased extended warranty which covers additional 100,000 miles / 48 months.

The fine print on warranty paper says, In order to keep my warranty. I am responsible for all the fluid changes on time.

I did a used car inspection at Honda Dealership and they suggested that I should get my transmission fluid changed because it is recommended at every 30K miles.

Could you please suggest to me if it is true that I have to change the Tranny Fluid at every 30K because I had a 2003 Honda accord and I sold it recently with 374,000 miles on it. I changed the Transmission fluid on my Accord at every 100K interval.

Thanks fellas

I'd say do it. I just did it on our '13 EX. Not hard to do if you have one of those devices that sucks the oil out (I used my son's). Didn't even have to get down on the ground.
Some here will say it doesn't get all the 'junk' out if you don't drain it from the bottom. I did it after a 2 hr freeway drive and all the 'junk' was nicely suspended in the fluid so no problem there.
For what it's worth, I didn't change the trans fluid in my V-6 '02 Accord until the 105k mile check up. Trans shifted like new according to the tech that did the job, and that was his opinion of it BEFORE he changed the fluid.
Since it's so easy, with my son's help, I'll be doing ours at 30k intervals, just because.

(And I read the manual when I bought the '02 and it never addressed changing the trans fluid, at all.)

My understanding is Honda recommended transmission fluid change about once every 30,000 miles. I say about because the code normally pops up at the same time as the oil life wrench is displayed. It will be Maintenance Minder sub-code 3.

Since your CRV has 34,700 miles the sub-code 3 could have popped up earlier or it may pop up soon. Either case since you don't know if it was changed go ahead and do it. It's easy and doesn't take all that much fluid. Plenty of other post describing the procedure.

Honda says change auto trans fluid every 30k period. This is to keep your trans running optimally. Trans fluid is subject to a lot of pressure and heat. Like engine oil, when it begins to turn color to not reddish but brownish it wearing out. Such a low cost way to maintain an expensive auto trans.

That 30K interval was for traditional transmissions.

The CVTs go longer. My friend asked me to change the fluid in his '15 Accord CVT at 55K miles. His MM hadn't come up with a code, either.

The MM will tell you when to do it. However, on my '13 V with the 5 speed auto and my '14 Civic with the CVT, I did the first fluid change at around 40K miles and now I'll be doing it on 30K mile intervals. In both vehicles the code didn't show up until around 55K miles.

I have a question..I took my 2015 CRV into the shop (not the dealer) They had given me a price for transmission fluid change, but said that the compartment was totally sealed, and only the dealer can change it (for a lot more money). Is this true?

No. In fact there are MANY YouTube videos showing the shop how to change the CVT fluid (if they are willing to learn).

... still I don't know why Honda did that since they said in the tech bulletin that they recommended changing it more often in city driving (severe) <25,000 miles rather than the 2 year/30,000 miles for severe interval on the automatic. Personally, since more heat is generated with a CVT than an automatic, I would change it more often. That is, unless they put in a trans cooler or redesign the system. I don't see an issue changing both trans and rear diff every 15k, but others may feel this is a burden.

The full capacity is what 7-8 quarts, and got to get to the torque converter, as you do one the change will weaken the fluid, do it twice by adding and emptying will only drain the new fluid, a ride for a few minute and then drain will further weaken the fluids, three will be just fine

drain/fill ride, drain/fill ride, drain/fill ride and change at Xamount, the ride can be up to a mile.

Lets say if the Warranty at the beginning of the Post wants the Operator to be responsable for the changes.

your owners manual wi say a few things. but not the actual trans fluid change inteval. so I wrote reference it again sorry

I will just wait for the the mileage minder to tell me to change. I would think the OP would be safe to do so as well. I would ask them to show me where Honda says 30,000 miles under normal conditions, not some service writer who wants to take your money. I would think Honda corp knows best.
