Hey everyone, 2006 CRV with some 415,000 miles. It’s been having no problems at all, runs great and starts great and just took it on a long trip with no issues. However, the other day it decided not to start.

I checked all the usual things, fuses and relays and whatnot. Battery seems fine as it can run all the power in my car, windows and radio and whatnot. I have no multimeter so I checked them visually or by swapping. Not sure if there is a fuse or relay I may have missed, but I think I got them all. I then changed, in this order, the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, and starter. I do all my own work so if the price isn’t bad for parts I’ll just swap them out. However, it still doesn’t start.

Any ideas? I have to be missing something, or it would be starting.

I have no multimeter
My goodness, you could have bought one for $7 USD from Harbor Freight!

How much have you spent on parts so far?

++++++++++++++++

But to get back to your issue, you need three things to run an engine:

Air
Spark
Fuel

Have you tried spraying a starting fluid into the throttle? If it sputters you don't have fuel from the injectors.

Have you removed spark plugs? Are they 'wet' with fuel? If so, no spark. If they are dry, no fuel.
(Might be a bad cam or crank sensor.)

Can you hear the fuel pump run at key on, engine off? (listen carefully)

I had a spare starter kicking around, the other parts were maybe $90. Harbor Freight isn’t close, unfortunately.

I don’t believe it’s fuel or spark related. I turn the key and I hear things click on, but nothing happens. It’s as if I tried turning the key with a totally dead battery, except everything seems to be getting power.

How about a Lowes or Homedepot?
They sell multimeters. Some as cheap as $40.
Or even a test light for under $20.
Amazon sells them also.

Test light ... clip to battery negative
Probe to engine block. Key in crank position.
Does it light up? If yes then bad engine ground.

Try cleaning battery posts and cable terminals
Follow negative cable to chassis ground and clean ground point

Was able to borrow a multimeter and leads. The battery is fine, as are all the big fuses and smaller ones. About 12.5 volts. Running leads from the battery to the solenoid gets a click.

What should the voltage be at the wire that plugs into the solenoid? How do I test the voltage getting to the starter? Sorry, very new to chasing down electrical demons.

So to clear - the engine will not crank. Is that correct? If so you need to check voltages down the starter 'path' - so yes get yourself a multimeter first 😊. Doesnt need to be anything fancy....

yup! Been using it…checked everything I could reach without taking the manifold off. Seems like the only odd reading is my battery grind cable which reads various amounts under the 12.5 or so everything else seems to read. Going to try and clean that ground up.

Personally own a 2007 CRV and not very familiar with other year models.
Believe Honda engineers put a single wire or pin connector near by the battery.
That wire should be from the ignition switch and go to the starter solenoid.
If you can check to see if there is 12 volts when key is in crank position
Or, put 12 volts on the wire going to the starter solenoid.

If you already put a wire from battery positive post to solenoid on starter
And only got a click then it could be the starter motor is not functioning properly
Or the engine ground connection is bad.
