If I recall correctly the EX only came in 4wd. If you wanted FWD you had to buy an LX model.

 

That's what I have been seeing on kbb and other websites. Shouldn't it be obvious that it's got AWD? That's my problem, I don't know if this seller is misinformed and there is something I should be looking for on the vehicle to confirm AWD or if something is suspect about the VIN number.

 

The first thing to look for underneath is the rear differential.Or you can look at the VIN Number.

I found the VIN chart on line the VIN definitely indicates AWD/4WD drive. Is there any way to tamper with a VIN? I can't understand how someone doesn't know what their selling. We may go back and take another look underneath to confirm. If you find anything else we can check please send it my way. Thanks for your help!

 

If the seller claims they are selling it for someone else it may a sign to walk away.

They could be what we call in the business a "curbsider".

Curbsiders are basically and unlicensed used car lot working out of someone's driveway.

More often than not you Really taking a huge risk buying a vehicle this way.

 

Thanks for your help our instincts were telling us the same thing, but it is hard to find a CRV in the price range we need for our 16 yo.

 

All 1998 EX models were Real Time 4WD. Maybe the rear window and/or hatch has been replaced with one for a 2WD CR-V?

 

Here in Manila, some AWD CRV (Gen1) owners are removing the propeller shaft to make it FWD. They say that it might save some gas mileage, but some said, you loose power and end-up saving only less gas mileage.
