It basically looks like what a modern Gen 1 CRV would today, and about the same size too-the CRV has grown over the generations and the new HRV seems to be backfilling the size the CRV used to be.
Gen 1 CR-Vs don't look big on the outside but are surprisingly roomy.

To me, the HR-V looks like a little size upgrade from my Elantra GT hatchback, but not in the neighborhood of any CR-V.

Overall, beyond the front/rear lights and rear door handles (and the steering wheel being on the wrong side), the HR-V for the USA will likely not differ all that much from the new one we have now in the UK.

I'm going to hold Honda's feet to the fire on the "sporty and versatile" claim in the teaser. 😋

I really have high hopes for the next gen HRV. They had plenty of time observing and addressing the weaknesses in the current generation HRV. The current generation was a bit quirky, and under powered for it's job in my view, and also noisy. Given the market segment it fills, I expect it will still be on the noisy side, but I have higher hopes for a more functional, and smoothly powered HRV. Given they will likely sell ICE versions in the US, they need a motor that properly feeds the needed torque to the CVT without having the engine racing in rpm to seek torque.

If they hit the price points right, as Honda usually does, I bet they sell a ton of these in ICE, hybrid, and maybe even an EV variant at some point. Cannot tell yet if they are going straight to hybrid, or if they continue with an ICE version in the US. A small new configuration of torque rich turbo ICE with a properly matched CVT would probably give any hybrid version a run for it's money. I guess we will find out in April. :)
 
Based on the Civic seems odd. Isn’t the Euro HR-V still based on the Jazz/Fit?
An observation on my part about new generation Hondas in the pipeline:
In the SUV/CUV market space, Honda has finally filled out it's lineup through the HRV, CRV, Passport, Pilot family with the new generations. Fit is completely gone from Honda now, so there is no Fit platform to derive from. So, it makes sense they use the Civic platform as the starting point

In doing so, Honda appears to be lifting the positioning of each model in the market place. The CRV, which like all Honda models continues to grow slowly in size over the generations appears to be slotted now as a mid-size SUV/CUV, and they have notched the HRV up from sub-compact to compact. This is likely quite in line with the bigger HRV in the new model year coming. Pilot fills the "full size" slot in their lineup (even though there are other competing models on the market that are bigger and are called full size (mainly because the next step after mid-size is full-size). This makes me wonder if the new gen6 CRV, might be based on the Accord platform moving forward, or just a bigger platform variant of the Civic. There is precedent for the Accord as a platform as that is how they deployed the old Crosstour model.

What I want to see now is the new gen HRV and the new gen CRV in a side by side lineup. Because unlike the roller skate wonky current generation HRV, the new one actually looks like it really a nicely refined compact SUV/CUV.

I am encouraged to see that they noted an improved power train for this new HRV, which was one of the real sore spots in the most recent generation. I wonder if they will tip a 1.5T into it, or go with something a bit more compact, like a new Turbo variant of their 1.3L power trains.

As for the video... man that was an epileptic overload of flashing and splashing. The marketing chimp that produced that needs to be reassigned, in my view. :p

I want to see the actual power train they plan to use, as well as the actual interior of the new HRV. I remain concerned it will still be under powered, and they will cheeze out the interior in the name of economic MSRP. They made if very clear this is the new entry level model in their non-sedan lineup coming. And as long as they don't fumble on the power train and interior design features, I bet they sell a truck ton of these each year moving forward.

Oh, yeah.. and they better offer it with a great variant of iMMD hybrid power train as well. :D
 
I think this is a great alternative to the CR-V since prices are continually creeping up. This has potential to be a best seller by making it bigger, powerful and based on the Civic. I actually considered the HR-V in 2016 but ended up in a Civic because the HR-V was underpowered. If Honda can produce enough of them is another story.
 
The problem with entry-level CUVs is the lack of much sound deadening. The new Toyota Corolla Cross is fine for around town use, but suffers from much noise on highways.

True. So I think longer term these will be the first market segment no longer offered in ICE versions in the US.

I think the new HRV design (which needed to be replaced anyway due to age) is a response to seeing the Toyota Cross entering the market, as well as other brands already with a foothold there. It seems to be a popular segment with a lot of growth petential. Toyota kind of set a new notch point in the market when they released the Cross, and kept is lightly brand linked to the Corolla.

With the FIT gone from the Honda lineup now, and the redesigned HRV moving up into the compact space, this leads me to believe Honda may be working on a new sub-compact CUV to compete in the Toyota CHR in the subcompact CUV space. I think longer term, as hybrids and EVs proliferate, the subcompact CUV segment may be where we see a lot of the lower cost EV, PHEV product releases in coming years. It is the fastest way into the young adult market segment and it helps drive down overall cost of EVs as an aggregate in the market. But right now, the subcompact SUV market segment is still pretty small annual volumes.

CHR is wiping the floor with the rest of the CUVs over here. Mad sales.

I like it a lot but it's completely pointless for me and does not have a place in the cabin to put your phone to.
I feel sorry for any kid that has to sit in the back of a CHR.

If Toyota is good at making something awful, its the interior(s). Heaven only knows how Lexus is a part of that group!

Heh.... when I was a kid... we rode standing in the front seat 2 feet away from the metal dash board and glass windscreen. Seat belts? What seat belts? When Mom went flying around a corner she simply told us "hold on to your shirt!!" :eek:
