I have had my 2017 CRV for just under 6 months. For the first 3 months my phone worked consistently with the USB plug in and the Android Auto app to connect to the car. With no change in the phones function or damage to the connecting cord the Android Auto app would disconnect while in use. I was able to identify that the connection would drop if I was driving on a bumpy surface or going over a speed bump etc. After confirming that my phone was working properly, uninstalling and reinstalling Android Auto on my phone, checking its function in another vehicle, checking the cord to ensure it was not damaged I booked it in to the dealer. Their first response was that it was my phone. The technician worked on it for 3 hours and couldn't reproduce the problem. I asked to take the technician for a drive to show how I was able to connect and how the connection would drop. I was able to reproduce the problem first try. A new USB plug was ordered and installed a week later.
This appeared to solve the problem. Fast forward 4 weeks.....yesterday I went to use Android Auto in my vehicle and it will not load on the car. It opens on my phone. The cord being used and connected to the USB port provides a charge. Has anyone else had any issues of this nature? I know when I call the dealer tomorrow their first comment will be that my phone needs a factory reset.

As strange at it may seem, it's entirely possible for a USB cord to charge but still not connect properly enough for Android Auto to communicate between the phone and the head unit.
Unless you still have the original usb cord that came with your phone (those are always the best), you'll have to to a bit of trial & error with a few cords to try and find a good one.

EDIT: Also, make sure that on your phone, in the Android Auto app, under "settings", you don't have it set so Android Auto automatically starts when it detects the Bluetooth connection with your car. This could be the reason for your new problem where Android Auto doesn't even starts on your head unit when you plug it in but starts on the phone.

I've also found, with Apple CarPlay, that certain apps running in the background will cause a "device not connected" issue. I've found myself force closing all my apps before I connect to the head unit and then I have no issues for the duration of my trip.

I have an aftermarket Pioneer HU in my current SUV which has Android Auto. If I use a flimsy USB, it disconnects going over bumps. If I use my Anker USB cable, it stays connected. Yesterday, my phone (Samsung S8) flew off the seat and stayed connected.

When test driving a 2018 CR-V EX-L, I used my Anker USB cable and it stayed connected.

The Anker cables have a thicker outer jacket than my cheap USB cables. I buy my Anker cables from Amazon.

My new 2017 CRV wouldn't let me load AA. I have an HTC 10 phone, running Android 7.0. Here's what worked:
Settings>More>USB Connection>Remember chosen USB mode - Uncheck

Mine was checked. You have to plug in the USB before the phone will allow the change.

Hope this helps.

I'm guessing you are using the first USB port and not the second one. You could try to borrow an iphone and see if carplay works...if it does then you know its probably not the USB port or head unit but probably the phone (and maybe yet another USB cord problem)

I struggled for a few hours over several days when my cell phone wold no longer connect to the head unit. Somehow, Android Auto became disabled in the head unit for my phone, but not for my wife's phone. This could have happened when I re-installed Android Auto. Anyway, this sentence of advice made me very happy after a frustrating few days. Thanks!

Make sure your Android phone USB connection is set to Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and not "Charge Only" when connected to the USB port in the car.

My phone works with Android Auto every time when the USB connection is set to MTP, even when using cheap aftermarket cables.

How about an update? Have you gotten AA to work? I have not, I pretty much gave up on it. Tried several new cables, reinstalled AA on my phone, did a factory reset on my phone. REset AA on the Honda head, tried all sorts of Android developer options, tons of stuff. Once in a while it would work for a trip or two, then it would quit.

Sucks. AA is one of the reasons we chose Honda.

AA is one of the reasons we chose Honda.
What were the reasons you chose your phone?

We have a '16 Civic Touring and an '18 CR-V Touring. Since we got the '16 Civic we've had Nexus 5, 5x, Pixel, and Pixel2 phones. AA has always worked. Some versions of AA on the phone side have been more or less stable. My point is that the Android version, and patches to it, on the phone side also is relevant. And many (most) Android manufacturers/carriers don't give a rip--kinda like Honda.

For those who are having trouble, how old is your phone? If you've had it for awhile you might check your USB port.. take a toothpick and make sure there isn't any lint or crud up in there, and user an alcohol wipe to clean the contacts

I've used a few phones with my crv and AA and they worked, a pixel XL, pixel 2XL, S9+ and Moto X. If I've had trouble, deleting the phone from the crv and adding it again did the trick. The cable could be the problem. I use the port on the right in the box, I forget if that matters.

I have a few iPhones that never have a problem connecting to my 2019 EX-L. I also have a Note10+ and an S10+ and a few times now on each of those, it won't connect. I have to delete the two phones in the settings and then se the phones again. Although there a few things I like better in Android Auto, I've been using my iPhone instead because it always works. I don't have tome to sit there and reset a phones connection some days. I bought my 2019 new in May.
