I have a 2013 CRV EX-L AWD (NO navigation) and like to add a touchscreen for android auto use. It has the 6-speaker + subwoofer sound system, XM and 6-CD changer, and steering wheel control

My understanding is the small screen (backup camera, mileage etc.) stays and the new screen will replace the old radio controls. I saw many that replace the entire foot-long radio amplifier unit and I'm a bit confused to what I actually need. Ideally I keep the amplifier and only get the screen with the controls. For some I saw I wasn't sure if they will just work with the existing 6+1 way amp. Many on ebay/amazon don't really show a manual specific to my 6+1 sound system (or none at all)

My use is 100% podcast/music and navigation through my android 12 phone. I never use FM, radio, CD, XM etc. the only reason I might want to keep those features is if I sell the car the prospective owner may want them. but that may be in 3+ years. I may just keep the old control button thingy if the new owner wants it. So for me, no FM/XM/CD is fine, but would be a usable addition. Below the pic of my radio.

Currently my use is to put my phone on a suction-mounted X-RAM mount and feed the sound through BT. So I have to take the phone out my pocket and it is somewhat in my way (which is good when using Maps). the new solution should be just a bit simpler and without needing to attach the phone to the mount. I use steering wheel control to change volume and skip/forward music and podcasts.

I saw many units have android 10/11. Are there ones with update paths? Is that a problem to run an old Android? My phone has android 12 (and will be up to 15). I also read WiFi may be used in addition to BT. I probably will never use an iPhone, but having Apple carplay would be nice for resale value.

What devices and features should I look at that would work with MY specific sound system? What are decent devices?

Some features I think may be nice are brightness/glare protection, good touch sensitivity,

Thanks. Looks like each screen will require about $210 in addl. parts. Which one of the under $500 and with volume knob has a good display (glare/sensitivity etc) or which is generally better? I don't know Boss/Jensen. For starters, I would guess a larger screen is always better. But I assume there is a difference in resolution/brightness/sensitivity and a good 9" screen could be better than a bad 10". they don't list many data for that. they also don't list wifi. is that really needed? someone told me Apple carplay works with BT and Wifi (and wifi has more bandwidth). Do those manufacturers offer software updates so that also works nicely with future phones?

Edit: all of them say they have apre-built 4x pre-amp. but i have 6 (+ subwoofer) channels. am i gonna lose the 2 channels? Is there a way to use the original 6+1 amp and just get the screen part? Unless I mis-understand, i pay for a the amp portion again, and will have fewer channels.

I have installed this on my V pretty straight forward to install if you have all the correct wires. I lost the sound on the sub under the seat but it's okay planning to get a JL Audio Sealthbox, the backup camera will be a fish eye view only and you will loose the settings to adjust the clock on the small screen.

I chatted a bit with Crutchfield. All of the devices list the parking brake needs to be applied to change all settings (or watch videos, which I don't need). They said my car has that parking brake wire by the parking switch. It sounds like lot of wiring to get that to the radio location. I assume this parking brake switch is some Nanny state requirement.... so can I just jumper that or can I just not change settings unless I wire to the brake?

Somehow the chat was disconnected and I didn't get to the part if any of the manufacturers provides updates.

Edit: the notes on the Crutchfield site also say I will lose car-clock adjustment. I realize the Android device also shows the time (from phone). But I think it will drive me crazy to see the wrong time in the OEM display (summer time, inevitable inaccuracy, or after battery disconnected). Did anyone come up with a solution to this?

Glad you got some useful information from them. I can’t help you with you specifics, other than to comment most reputable audio system manufacturers will offer firmware updates if/when necessary. Phone manufacturers also work pretty hard to keep their updates (AA/CarPlay) backward compatible so I don’t think you’ll have any issue there. You can check a specific manufacturer’s website to see if they offer firmware updates, as an example here is Pioneer —

I installed a new headunit (joying) and retained all steering wheel controls and factory clock still works - syncs with headunit and imid still displays the radio station. I have an EXL as well and no issues with 7 speaker setup.

I chatted to Crutchfield again. they said with the expensive wiring package the steering wheel control can be used to set the clock. They also said the brake switch wire connection should be somewhere there and be part of the wiring package. so i guess this is a solvable problem.

But what I didn't realize is that the Android Car function is via USB only (BT only transmit the sound) and to get that done wirelessly, I need to go to the alpine for $1,400 or buy a separate adapter of sorts. ah, mmmhhhh. I didn't realize that in 2022 we still have a wired phone connection as an option. So unless this gets much more expensive it would be a step backwards from my current setup. I originally had an eye on the Boss BE10 for $400 + the $210 wiring kit. If it requires $1,600 to be fully wireless, buying a new car with that built in makes more sense....

My vehicle has the XM radio, external amp and subwoofer. After hooking up the Joying stereo all six speakers are working but the subwoofer is not. No sound came from the Joying stereo until I turned on its internal amp. The sound is good even without the sub, except the sound volume at level 1 is higher than I would prefer, even after adjusting it to be as low as possible.

Hello! I have a 2014 EX-L, Factory Amp & Sub, no nav. I just ordered the Joying 9" JY-HQ153N8G-B head unit (8gb +128ram....I wanted zero lag/drag). Here it is on ebay: Link to Joying 9" Android HU on ebay So I have gone on multiple sites, watched videos, but I am hearing 2 different answers about the factory amp/sub. Most of the android HU installs are on an LX (no amp/sub). I am not planning (right now at least) changing speakers or amp...I want to run through the factory amp/sub/speakers. My question: Do you....or do you not have to do any splicing to get the factory amp and sub to turn on? Do you have to do any splicing at all to get the amp to turn on, or is it really just plug and play. I know I have to splice into the #3 and #19 (I think) on the factory harness to get the factory camera to work. For now, I want to just make sure everything turns on as expected. Thanks in advance for your help!
