New owner with a 2005 -192,000 miles. USA model automatic. 2 wheel drive . Just purchased it Saturday, filled up the Gas tank and smelled gasoline , real bad. On it maiden voyage........ Pulled over to find a lot of raw gasoline on the tank sides, and the charcoal canisters. Like dripping !!!!!! Pulled the carpet to find the top of the gas tank access metal bracket, and it looks virgin that has never been touched by a screwdriver

Just wondering if this is a usual problem, or just something weird. But I already know dripping gasoline is weird to begin with....... Previous owner mentioned nothing about bad gas smell or dripping gasoline.

Body of vehicle underneath fair, not rusted through. Car resides in Cincinnati Ohio all it's life, and will remain so.

Any usual culprits- hints will be accepted. Thanks Joe

With flammables the first concern is safety; energized or hot components in the immediate area. Canister vent valve comes to mind, There may be others.

When filling the tank, did the pump stop normally? Did the gas overflow? Could there be a leak in the fill pipe or the connections to the gas tank or gas cap area?

Check the Fuel Pump lock ring. It’s a big nut that holds the fuel pump assembly in the tank. It’s easy to get to but kinda hard to seat properly. If the previous owner replaced the fuel pump or fuel filter, which in in the fuel pump assembly, they may not have it on fully. I had one that cracked and fuel was leaking like yours. Replacement rings are available from several aftermarket vendors.
Fold the rear seat up against the front seats and pull back the carpet. the fuel pump is under a cover behind the drivers seat.

I think I’d be looking at the filler pipe and the tank for holes. I’d also take off the access cover, itll let you look at both the lock ring previously mentioned above as well as the fuel line connection to the fuel pump. Perhaps someone either forgot the fuel line retainer or reused the old one, or they forgot to put the gasket on the fuel pump.

Anyway, if you are not up for it, obviously take it to a mechanic who is interested.

an example of forgetting the gasket and the retainer clip are at the 0:43 second mark on this video:

I have this same problem. I saw some gas spilled under my access port.

When changing my fuel pump. I used new retainer and gasket but had to use my old lock ring. I used a 2006 crv fuel pump on my 2002, and the 2006 ring was too small. I made sure the gasket and retainer were installed correctly.

I had the smell before I changed the pump tho… my car was driven through lots of sand before I got it. Could that do anything to my evap system? I also had some sticky gasoline on the outside of my tank. One thing I know is that it isn’t the hard lines. They are in good shape still. I am in the same boat as you.

A common leak area is where the nylon fuel line connects to the metal one right off of the fuel pump. If you look at the top of the gas tank there is a 1 foot long nylon flex line that comes off the fitting for the fuel pump and then connects to a barb on the metal fuel line that goes to the front of the car. Moisture builds up here and rusts away the line. Since this is the main pressurized fuel line it will spray a lot of fuel when the car is running and then stop leaking after the car sits for a bit because the fuel pump is no longer pressurizing it. The only two other areas where gas would leak is the fuel pump housing screw seal that mates the fuel pump housing to the gas tank and the fuel filler neck which is a barb and hose clamp on the side of the gas tank towards the charcoal canister.

Gas / Fuel smell outside the car near the driver's...
Has anyone else had this issue? Which part did you replace?
I see in the other post that one person replaced just the o-rings inside the 90 degree connector coming off from the line.
Not sure if should order whole line.
Fuel Pipe - 2003 Honda CR-V 5 Door LX (2WD) KA 4AT
or just the connector and swap the o-rings.
More Information for DORMAN 800081
Replace the o-ring first and if that doesn't work cut that connector off the nylon line and put a new 90-degree connector on. Honda Fuel lines are 5/16 so you'll need a 5/16 nylon fuel line connector.

I order the 5/16" connector but the o-rings inside were smaller than the ones that came out of the one on the car. I had to put the old ones back in.
I got this one. https://www.autozone.com/fuel-syste...-16in-steel-to-5-16in-nylon-tubing-fuel-line-quick-connector-2-piece/839129_0_0
Any ideas on the correct part?
It seems like the next size up would be 3/8". Can that be right? 5/16" retaining clip that came with it is too small too.
I don't think they sent the wrong part as I measured the inside of the clip and it is 5/16 while the original one is bigger.

OK. I embarrassed myself. My large and almost caught on fire gas leak, turned out to be from a probable wreck that the previous never told me about.
The gas tank cage was crushed backwards, pushing the tank strap drivers side backwards 4 inches, cracked the rubber tube from the metal filler tube to the back tank itself, and cracked the plastic top gas tank fuel pump tube . Talk about a wet dripping tank , underside , I drove for 20 minutes and lost 4-5 gallons of fuel. Also I had to remove the charcoal evaporator emissions assembly which also was crushed backwards 4 inches and coding the computer.
I wasn't expecting any of this …thinking I got a great deal, and a tiny fuel issue- That I could deal with easily!!!!!
Not so fast……
I will update my repairs - labor times later Pictures show what I didn’t look for at time of purchase.

It’s hard to imagine what they ran over, but it was definitely big . I could have spotted it had I looked under the CRV at time of purchase, but I can only blame myself for not doing so
Hours invested : 30 and counting sourcing used parts, driving, removing.
Parts needed. (All Used) Front gas tank 3 prong protector cage, unmolested left gas tank strap, unbent upper and lower emissions brackets , gas tank flex rubber tube (between tank and steel tube) , entire replacement emissions charcoal parts and assorted rubber tubes that were not crushed also .
New Parts . Brand new fuel pump assembly.
Install parts so far. Labor 14-16 hours. Still working too
Coinciding work- remove and wash out clogged Windschield washer holding tank
