Need advice for manual gearbox fluid maintenance change

Hi community,
I need to replace the transmission fluid (maintenance code 3) on my diesel, manual transmission. It's my first time so I'd like to make sure. Most videos and posts are on automatic transmission, so does not correspond to my specs. The filler plug is not really easy to find, it's under the battery tray as described in this post. It is my understanding I need to: 1. open the filler, 2. open the drainer, drain, close the drainer 3. refill with MTF-3 and 4. close the filler. Is there anything else I'm suppose to do?
Thanks !

Sounds as if you've got everything under control. I would try to keep the vehicle as level as possible while doing this procedure.

As you have figured out, removing the fill plug before draining the fluid is the smartest thing to do, whether it is for a manual transmission fluid replacement or for a rear differential fluid replacement on AWD vehicles.

The last posting for your recommended post indicates the fluid amount. Good to see you using Honda-brand fluid. Some folks on this forum may have a different idea about that, but using what Honda recommends, IMHO is the only way to go.

Not knowing which MT you have, I would purchase 4 L knowing that I have more than enough for both the 6sp / 2.5L & the 7sp / 3.1. After making the exchange, drive a while then check your fluid level. Sometimes the fluid will have to "settle" in order to get a correct fluid level reading.

Good to see another wrench-turner here on the forum. Report back, with photos if possible, when you complete this project.

Replacing transmission fluid was the last maintenance I'd never performed (except code 4). And I'm glad I did not start by this task as it was in my opinion the most complicated. On my model, the fill plug is hard to reach. I don't know if there is an easier way, but I first moved the battery and then the battery tray so I can have enough space to work on the plug. I had to use two extensions to be able to use my wrench, see pic.

Then the story became easier: open the drain plug below the car, drain, close the drain plug with a new washer. I filled the car with the same amount of fluid that was drained plus some small margin. That was about 2.5l, even though I have 7 sp (or you don't count the reverse ?). Anyway, I used a hose for filling the new MTF-3 fluid, which in my opinion was a good option considering how far is the fill (couldn't Honda make it more accessible ?), see the pic2.

Last step, closing the fill plug with a new washer. Here I had to be extra careful as I did not want to lose the plug somewhere in the motor. The visual was very bad. I went very slowly and was able to find the right spot and close it. Job done.

Apologies for responding to an old thread, but as this thread is likely to be referenced by others seeking information about changing the transmission fluid in a car with a manual gearbox, I couldn’t help noticing that there was no mention of removing the third plug, namely the level plug. This needs to be removed before refilling to check the fluid level is correct before the fill plug is replaced.

Does anyone have a picture of the fill plug? I couldnt locate it. I have a 2.2D - 6 forward andreverse. I just filled up 2.5l and am slightly worried as 3l came out when I drained the fluid. But I didnt have faith in the previous mechanic. So I assumed the forums are right haha. Help ease my concience.
