In the industry we always said, "no matter how fool proof you made it the fools would outwit you every time". I have heard of examples of people accidentally turning off their cars with the key while driving. (People hang a lot of junk on their key rings and it hangs down and they catch it, twisting the key off) That, BTW, also locked up the steering wheel. Of course we all know of examples of ignition switches that failed and turned cars off while driving (ask GM about that...and they are not the only ones who have had problems).
I can not believe comments people make about Honda not caring if they put their customers lives in danger just because they didn't make a button work the way you think it should work. And, as for putting a "safety cover" over it...no way, especially after the problem Toyota had with the "run away" cars.
And for the record a friend of mine who works at NASA Marshall SFC worked with the investigation team that studied the Toyota problem. Guess what their findings were on the alleged run away cars. They found that people did NOT turn their cars off or put them in neutral when they panicked. They were, get this, afraid of hurting the engines or transmission. No corporate lawyer would allow a car maker to add difficulty in turning off the car under duress after what they know from these other experiences.
No matter what method you use to turn off the engine I promise you someone will come back and say that particular solution is "unsafe". I saw this for years of my working life. I sat through presentations with the corporate lawyers who had to defend our brand in crazy legal cases. As they say, no matter what you do you someone will come after you. I recall we had the same thing with air bags, we were being sued by people with air bags who claimed they were injured by them and at the same time being sued because another model car didn't have air bags as standard equipment (they were an option at one time on certain lower prices models. The lawyers for the plaintiff said we were "discriminating against people of lower income levels" or some silly thing.
No matter what, you can never please, or 100% protect, everyone. I am not losing any sleep over worries that I might accident shut off my car while driving, or forget to turn it off when I park it. I am statically more likely to be eaten by a hog in Indiana or choking on a hot dog than having either of these happen to me with my new Honda. (you can find those numbers if you like...they are published)
