Today I was driving my 2017 EX on the highway when the transmission started feeling strange. It was stepping down, then back to normal consistently even if I didn't change the pressure I had on the accelerator. Then all of a sudden many systems started reporting problems on my dashboard, all at the same time. Reported problems were:

  • Brake System Problem
  • All Wheel Drive System Problem
  • Tire Pressure Monitor Problem
  • Electric Parking Brake Problem
  • Road Departure Mitigation System Problem
  • Collision Mitigation System Problem
  • Lane Keeping Assist Problem
  • Adaptive Cruise Control Problem
  • Hill Start Assist Problem
  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) Problem
  • Anti-Lock Brake System Problem
  • Power Steering System (EPS) Problem
See attachments at the end of this, and a second post.

It goes without saying that we are very concerned as these are all safety systems that just started failing all of a sudden while driving. I stopped the car, turned it off, then back on, and all messages were still there. I turned it back off, walked away since we arrived where we were heading, had lunch, went back to the car, and this time, all error messages were gone. I called the dealership, but they said that since there was no errors anymore, they may not be able to diagnose it; then asked me that next time I should drive it straight to the dealership while the problem messages were still on.

Has anyone else experienced any issues with these many electrical systems at once? We drove for about an hour and a half after all error messages were gone, and they did not turn back on, but my wife is already saying she doesn't feel safe in the car and that she would freak out if she was driving alone and all those alerts and alert sounds started coming up all of a sudden.

I still plan to take it to the dealership in case the car has all the codes stored or something, but any suggestions are appreciated.

I've had this happen twice. The 1st time was after a big snow and a satelite sensor was obstructed with ice and snow (there is 1 on the windshield where the rear view mirror is attached and 1 on front grill where the H symbol is. The 2nd time I had gone over big pothole and clump of road material and the sudden tilt had knocked the satelite out of alignment, just had to go to dealership to have it re-aimed.

I just had this multi-error scenario yesterday (July 4). The car just kept dinging with each new error message. However, I did not notice anything unusual with the operation of the car (accept ACC wouldn't turn on) - brakes worked, accelerated just fine. Turned it off, turned it back on - same set of cascading errors. Drove it home. As my CRV is now 3.5 years old, what is this going to cost me to get it remedied?

The price of a new battery would be my first guess.
Well, that would be nice, but there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with my battery... car starts just fine - rear hatch opens and closes just fine (on battery). I'm hoping it's just a sensor adjustment - I've read about the forward camera falling out of alignment - but I fear a whole new circuit board/computer replacement :(

Absent an actual load test of the battery... you are speculating at best. At 3.5 years... your battery would be a prime suspect. In modern vehicles.... ~70% of all starter batteries will fail within 48 months.

Step 1: get the battery load tested.. most auto parts stores are happy to do this for you for free.

Step 2: If battery tests good, then you need to get a readout on the OBDII for error codes, which if present will likely localize the issue for service.

If the above two steps do not find the culprit.. then you need to take it to the dealer for a full diagnostic. It is literally impossible to predict what it will cost to remedy the issue until the problem is localized to a replaceable unit (and in these vehicles.. literally everything now days is an FRU except fluids, and the markup on electronic FRUs is obscene).

Oh, The irony.
Once again, every malfunction light lit up,an owner could possibly visually process while driving...from ABS to whatever, but not a single light for a supposedly, bad $60 battery.

Oh, the irony of it...

I guess that’s why Honda has a reputation for good mechanical design, but not for good electronics. Just glad they don’t make electronic systems for airplanes or rockets.
Imagine this system on jetliner- hurdling straight down towards earth , one cockpit warning light after another coming on...... and it’s all just a”bad cell in a battery “😂😂

Two comments in response to your anti-Honda snark:

1) there is an indicator light for a charging system or battery issue. It is not very specific.. being an idiot light.. but there is one present. Problem is.. with a bad electrical system of some form.. said warning light may or may not light up.. or it may just be one light among many on the instrument panel (most likely result). Not to mention.. the warning system and light could of course fail too.. because literally anything in a motor vehicle could fail at any time. Honda certainly is not going to spend $20-50 to provide a beefed up battery warning system for a $60 dollar battery. Of course the new starter batteries in the 2020s are much more expensive than that, particularly on the hybrid.. but that is a separate discussion.

Even though comparing a consumer motor vehicle with a flight certified modern jet aircraft is the height of absurd in order to make some point.......

2) Honda actually designs and manufactures small, efficient, modern jets for the private jet market. Fully certified for flight, has a number of novel innovations in design, and very reliable too. HondaJet | Official Site of Honda Corporate Jet Aircraft

Having known you via the forum for some time now, I expect better snark performance from you.. 'cause I know you have the skillz for it. :)

My 2017 CRV is doing the same thing .I took it to the dealer and they told me it was the spark plugs causing it. They charged me $400 dollars and two weeks later they are back on. I have had others with the same problem say that they were told it was anything from the battery to the fuel injectors. I also think it is happening in some of the other models too.

I took delivery of my EX on 1/31/17 and it did the same 8 days later.

It also would not shut off. I called Honda Roadside and 5 hours after the initial call around 6am, it was at the dealership. Snow was coming down and tow trucks had to attend to police calls as priority.

From the workorder...

Perform diagnostic steps codes U0104, P0864, U0101, U0155, B00D5-14, B12D0. All codes lead to system OK. Contact tech line. They advised switch known good Body Control Unit, this did not repair. Call tech line. They advised of issue with Trans Control Unit and switch with known good one. Transfer and this did not repair. Continued and found stuck circuit in Driver Multiplex Control Unit (MICU) Replaced with new one from Stock#848549. Program all units and clear codes from all systems. Perform all neutralizations and test OK.

The said they took the MICU out of another CRV on the lot as I was out of town for work. They gave me a loaner of a 2017 Accord Sport. They were able to get my vehicle back to me in about 5 hours.
I have the same issue as the original post. My lights keep coming on and I have brought it to the dealership multiple times and they say they are stumped. btalbert, did this solution work for you in the long run or has the issue continuously come up?

I have had this same issue come up about 8 or 9 times now since April 2020

i just took it to the dealer not even a week ago, they replaced the battery but today the issue came up again.

i have called Honda corporation but my case manager put my case aside.

I still thought it was funny :)
Update
I took my 2017 CRV in for all the dashboards lights (is that a Meatloaf song?)... I digress... anyway, they replaced the battery ($$) and all the lights went away. Of course they did - they reset them. Even the light for the item I KNOW is bad (Emissions) was off. The lights all came back on in a few days. I immediately called my Honda dealer - and they gave me another appointment - 3 weeks out. None of my electronic safety features work - ACC, LKA, emergency braking (whatever that acronym is)... my engine light is on (not flashing), my Brake light is on... but the car drives fine.

Three days before my appoint, all lights went out (except for Emissions) and all safety features resumed. Two day later they were still out so I canceled my appointment. My local Honda dealership is a very much "I can't help you if it doesn't make the noise" kinda folks... even with all this documentation, on this site and others, they would not attempt to diagnose - even with the $299 electronics diagnostic charge... again, I digress.

Three or four days after that, all the lights came back on again. I had a day trip coming up in a few days, so I was considering taking my other car... then the day before the trip... all the lights went out again. I took the CRV on the trip - no issues (I'm also getting 39mpg - even the my dealership tells me my Emissions problem will impact fuel economy). A week after my trip, the lights went on again.

This has continued every few days, or up to a week at a time for the past 3 months. I am totally not interested in taking my car in and paying $300 to let my dealership fiddle around and find nothing - they don't understand what to look for. I truly wish they had electronics experts on site. I'm a computer guy. Give me a set of observables and I can isolate your problem - based on experience (and Google!).

I'm not sure what to do. I love my CRV, but I hate these computer errors - and I'm concerned that they might someday mask a real safety problem.

same thing has been happening to me, they also replaced my battery yet the issue came back. But i am now speaking to lemon law lawyer!

Clearly.. you have the worst kind of problem ---> an intermittent. These require objective recording of symptoms followed by dealer diagnostics based on symptoms and any error codes (some are recorded and saved and some are not, as owners have found.

To use a metaphor for a moment here.....not that different than finding crap on our carpet, and you suspect the dog. But the dog is nowhere to be seen. You know there is crap on the carpet, and you think you know the source.. but unless you catch a dog in the act... discipline or training attempts are pointless.

I'm guessing you are out of factory warranty and have no HondaCare extended plan. Which means it is on your dime for finding cause and correction. To expect free diagnostic service is a bit over the top if this is the case.

But.. being an intermittent, in a complex motor vehicle, means it make take multiple service events at the dealer to isolate and resolve. It is best if you can actually show it to the dealer while it is misbehaving, not turning off the engine (to avoid losing any non-logged error message).

same thing has been happening to me, they also replaced my battery yet the issue came back. But i am now speaking to lemon law lawyer!
If you have not given the dealer and Honda Corporate the prescribed time and number of attempts to isolate and resolve (per your states lemon law legislation) then you jumped the gun here. But the lawyer will keep you inside the lemon law guard rails, so don't be surprised if the response is... "give them more time".

Reason: many lemon laws are written in such a manner as to result in summary rejection of a lemon law claim if you have not crossed every "T" and dotted every "I" BEFORE seeking legal remedy. This is to protect vehicle dealers and manufacturers from abuse at the hands of consumers under lemon laws. Hence the laws and requirements are disclosed and are expected to be followed before seeking legal remedy. Pulling the trigger too fast on a lemon claim can end up backfiring on an owner.

The whole goal of lemon laws is to reduce litigation, provide real incentives for remedy, AND to protect BOTH consumers and dealers/brands from breech of sale and specious claims or rejections by either party.

@EricG - I have found that the way to get the lights to turn off is to schedule a service appt (3 weeks out in my area). Only to have the lights go out 2-3 days prior to the service appt. I can cancel the appt, then low-and-behold, all the lights light-up again. I’ve had them go on and off multiple times in one day (but not often). The only constant I can report, is that I’ve never had the warning lights ‘go-out’ while the car is on. This only happens when starting the car - sometimes the warning lights don’t come on... ACC & emergency braking all work again. However, the warning lights appear to come on whenever they like... 5 min after engine start... 5 hours into a drive... at engine start.

My Honda service dept is unwilling to peruse the ‘boards’ to look for solutions. If it doesn’t come from Honda - it’s not included in the $299 assessment fee. We really need Honda to step up on this one - as it is potentially a safety hazard.

If anyone hears anything, please post here. Thanks!
