It makes perfect sense to me and probably quite a few others, pay some in advance to prevent a commonly known problem from reducing the reliability of the vehicle. I place a high value on reliability, and am willing to pay to maintain that level of reliability. Therefore if I know of a mechanical part that is known to fail at a certain approximate life, I will have that part rebuilt by competent people in that field, or replace it before it gets to that common known failure life.

In addition, to maintain reliability, just like others who value reliability, I will upgrade the battery size in the future, when the now 1 year old 51R 500 CCA battery is old enough that is should be replaced to maintain reliability.

 

Just to eliminate low voltage or high resistance at the push to start button,
Try cleaning the battery posts And the cable terminals. Inspect crimp of cable.
Follow negative cable to chassis and clean grounding point.
Locate engine grounding strap and clean that also.
Then if problems still persist have push to start diagnosed.

 

My wife and I purchased a "like New" 2015 CRV in 10/2017 with 15,771 original miles. It still had that new car smell and was perfect in and out. We had to change out the battery last year and now we are experiencing the intermittent push button start issues with only 46,863 miles as of today. We have changed out the key fob batteries and rotated (2) different fobs, but still having issues. I haven't read any updated posts that changing out the starter actually fixed the problem. My wife just texted me that she is having trouble again. I am a residential contractor and I can repair most things, but the YouTube videos are not conclusive either. I am pricing new starters right now and calling my mechanic. Anyone have any updates regarding your success with this problem or documentation from Honda Motor Company?

 

Just had to have mine rebuilt. $436 and a 2-year warranty. I've worked on a lot of cars over my lifetime, from run-of-the-mill domestics to Jaguars and would've done this myself but Honda made it almost impossible for a mere mortal, much less one 65 yrs old, to get to. I did find a source for a replacement starter (new) for just over $100 if you want to do it yourself. I am not associated with this company, know nothing about them and have no idea if the starter is quality or junk. But it's $100 and change. I was going to buy one and give it a shot if the repair was going over $500. Would've saved $400 but the deductible for the hospital visit would've come in north of that! BTW, i had replaced my remote batterys, temporarily installed a larger and stronger battery, and swapped out the start switch in the dash prior to the trip to the shop. All to no avail. Good luck!

Here in Pittsburgh PA we have a very good shop that specializes in rebuilding starters and alternators, replacing starter batteries, and fixing vehicle air-conditioners. It is ran by two brothers and that is the only type of work they do. All the independent auto mechanic shops in the area have them rebuild starters and alternators for them, but you can also bring a vehicle to there shop and they will pull and replace a starter of alternator for you. With previous vehicle I have had them rebuild starters and alternators when the mileage got high on them just as preventative maintenance. They are very good in the quality of their work. They do not do many UPS rebuilds from outside of the Pittsburgh area but if you can not find a good shop near you, you can find their shop on the web and phone them and set something up with them. They are called Edd's Generator.

From the above post, when my 2016 gets to 50 K miles I think I will have them rebuild the starter, but that is going to be a while. Mine only has 22 K now, and I will only put about 4 K to 6 K per year.

On 2002 model I replace a starter in 2012!
I Purchased a 2015 Honda CRV a year and a half ago began having the same problems you all are talking about intermittent fail to start issues -one dealership said they did a diagnostic and it was the starter I asked for the print out the print out did not show a starter problem they didn’t charge me for the diagnostic went back to the dealership I Purchased it they also said starter problem
I am very discouraged they told me this is a common problem with 2015 models
I keep reading there should be a recall how do we make that happen ?????
again I’ve always believed in Hondas and their product very discouraged by the dealership and in adequate parts products

that sucks... my mother's 2006 CRV has never had the start or alternator replaced since she's owned it all the way up to 2017 when we finally sold it. Just one battery and a ton of oil changes and the occasional fitlers.

 

Moving to Gen 4 Section. Replacing the too-small Group 51R battery with a larger one is a fairly common fix, and can resolve battery issues as well as give longer starter life due to better cranking amps. See this thread:

This can be done with any year model CR-V, using Honda battery case parts from the 2014 Odyssey. Info is included in the thread along with part numbers. Parts cost about $25. Takes just a little bit of mechanical aptitude to do. The Group 24F battery gives far better cranking amps and reserve power.

 

This just happened to mine. 2015 EX, 62K miles, new battery last spring and has been not starting intermittently for about a month. Replaced the key fob battery last week and the car left me stranded again. Getting the starter replaced today - it's not cheap! Hopefully this will take care of the issue. Have never had to replace a starter on a vehicle before. I agree that Honda should be doing a recall. This is ridiculous.

 

Battery was tested. Its good.

 

Usually that is from over cranking, low voltage or a bad battery connection or cable connection to ground. Chances are it is a weak/ defective battery. The battery needs to be load tested and checked with a hydrometer...it does not matter if the battery is only a month old...new battery's can be bad.

 

When the push button is not starting the engine ...change the battery in the key fob. I put a new battery in mine and a week or two later I was having this problem. Just to check and double check ,I got another new battery installed it in the fob and it solved the intermittent starting problem. I keep spare battery's in my glove box now.

 

Its not the fob. Happens with 2 different sets of keys and the starter solenoid is burned out.

 

This isn't bad luck. This is a common problem with this gen CRV- google will confirm. The bad news is that many times changing the starter doesn't even resolve the issue long-term and it's difficult to diagnose and resolve. Honda really should be doing a recall on the push button start functionality of this vehicle. Please update with how yours went. I'm having my starter replaced right now on my 2015. Our vehicle has been refusing to start intermittently for months now. It will go days with no issue then will take 2-50 attempts before it starts for several days. Vehicle only has about 70k mi.

 

Let’s add another 2015 CR-V with 39k miles to this list of starter problems. Just got it changed at the dealership and frustrated with Honda and it’s reliability.
Changed the OEM battery a little while ago because the dealership suggested it’s low. And now the starter.
Honda doesn’t seem to want to help reimburse or do right by it’s customers.
Perhaps these are the new Honda Quality standards!

 

My 2002 has the original starter... Also having a weak battery over time is hard on a starter.

 

My driving is mostly short runs around town, which is not a new pattern for my driving. I have never had to replace a starter in my prior vehicles, although this is my first vehicle with a push button start. I did have it tested and replaced by local Honda service and they said it just happens sometimes. Thank you for the input.

 

Had to replace ours at 104k. 52k is a little low but they break every once in awhile. Lot has to do with your driving pattern. Do you do a lot of short runs? Every time you start the car you're one start closer to failure.

 

It's hard to say without knowing what led to starter replacement.

 

sounds more like just a case of bad luck. One starter will last 20yrs, 300kmiles and the next wont even make it to 100k. Just happens. Surprised you didnt take it to Honda as 52k is a bit soon for a starter. but not something to be alarmed about.
